The good news is that there were immediate consequences to his screwing up, and that is part of the learning they need.
I do hope if he is at all serious, that he gets the help he needs. sometimes we just get so tired of everything it seems hopeless to go on...but there isn't really motivation to do anything. I hope that is what he is feeling.

Thank you all for your moral support! Our lives are built on quick-sand, it seems, and when we least expect it, there we go down in the pit. You DS friends are luckily always there to throw in a life line and help pull me out. Bless you all.
The panic attacks and depression are probably the underlying issues and he will be that much closer to a full recovery when he takes care of these. It's really a good sign that he opened up to you. It's tough, though, that he lost his job.
