My opinion is that "things like this happen" because you let them happen. In a way, you ask them to happen. You believe that, up to a certain extend, you have some control, some kind of power over his actions and feelings. That one more try to "talk" might make him really love you, ie show you that he loves you. No one has such powers. "One more talk" has no such power. I agree with your friend. Move on. Let it go. It's a scary and diffucult thing to do when hurt -and this guy has hurt your feelings- but it's also empowering. As you said, what about your needs?
About him saying he loves you. Love is not a word. It's actions.
When you stop going after the wrong things, you give the right things a chance.
we have no control over other people. the only thing we can control is how we react.
choose to be grateful that you have had such a lovely relationship, and make way for what God brings you in the future.
now here is my recovery story (he was not an addict then)
I was with a man from college for 7 years. he left me (after we planned our wedding) for someone he met at the beach for 3 days....but didn't tell me. I found out when the wedding invitations were shown to me by my neighbors. Good news! He didn't marry her. He married the woman he was cheating on BOTH of us with. And they divorced. ANYWAY, I was 27. Hoping to date again by my mid 30's. two months later I met my husband. 6 months later we married. 32 years later, still together. Motto? God can't put the right person in your life if you are hanging on the to wrong one. (just a thought). And I told the same thing to my own daughter.
Peace
focus on the things i enjoy and love to do- i have no bucket lists of things to do before getting married.. eversince i have prayed that i want to do and enjoy things with a partner. it's just so uncertain..
happy to hear your story!

we are all learning and growing as fast as we can.
control is an illusion...I believe we were all made with unlimited potential...so you just need to start loving yourself and working on that for your happy future.
