Ok, so my 22 yr old opiate addict son finally found a doctor he seems to be doing well with. Problem is: 1) They don't accept his insurance and 2) they've been giving him subutex which his insurance doesn't cover. It costs $350 to $400 a month to see this doctor plus the out of pocket costs of meds not covered by insurance (subutex). This inlcudes only two group meetings a month. They are now trying to switch him to suboxone which he says he can't take....says it makes him sick but his insurance will cover it. He just called me from the doctor's office where they just gave him a dose of suboxone. I could not understand one word he was saying...I had to ask him to put someone else on the phone. He was mumbling and very soft spoken. Of course, he puts opiate addict pregnant girlfriend on the phone. She says the dose has made him sick. My feeling is that, especially with his reluctance to change to a doctor who accepts his insurance, is that he just wants the subutex, which I know can be abused (melted down and shot up). Can he really not tolerate suboxone? Is he selling or abusing subutex? If so, is this the lesser of two evils? At least he's not doing heroine. This is so incredibly frustrating. Please someone help me help him.
