Families & Friends Of Addicts Support Group
Addiction affects more than just the individual. This community is dedicated to the families and friends of individuals suffering from any form of addiction. Mental health professionals are increasingly considering alcoholism and addiction as diseases that flourish in and are enabled by family systems. Family members react to the addicted person with particular behavioral...
When I first found this site I soaked up all the stories looking for similarities and differences. I wanted so much to believe my addict and I were special. That I wouldn't have to experience the incredible pain of loving someone who was destroying them self. That if I did everything by the book I could save him and have the relationship of my dreams- the love of my life.
I learned what I needed to really know to survive the pain of loving an addict. When I reached out in anguish and panic when I realized I was powerless in the face of his addiction, others were there to understand. I can never thank anyone enough.
With the support here I was able to end my relationship but not loving my addict - the man trapped inside what will be for him, a death sentence. I am dealing with the guilt of leaving him to suffer, but with the wisdom here will work it through.
It's a precious thing when a band of invisible strangers can change your life in such a meaningful way. Thank you all from the bottom of my sore but healing heart.
we got our son into rehab and he was kicked out 6 days later. i would've let him come home - my husband wouldn't. in that week he was on the streets he almost died from od'ing on heroin....and he went back into rehab with alot of prompting from us. i think that may have been his bottom
I became addicted to my sons addiction. When I heard people say take care of you first, it was so foreign to me, because after all I was the caretaker, I always took care of everything and everybody. The typical "A" personality, control freak. Little did I know I couldn't save my son, I could only save myself.
I learned everything I could about addiction, co dependency, enabling and what I learned that I never expected Were some of the greatest lessons of my life. This site has given me the education, the understanding and the strength to make some of the tough decisions not just to support my sons recovery but to help me on my journey of recovery from my sons addiction. I have come a long way from the horrified, lifeless and sacred women that search support for drug addicts almost one year ago. Today I have friends that have been my angels and strength in my darkest hour, I have a son that is 8 months sober because of the advice, suggestions. And stories you shared to help me create boundaries, I have learned to never judge anyone because I have no idea of their journey, I have learned that addiction is a disease that will be forever a part of my life and that I can either let it consume me or I can fight with every fiber of my being and not let it take me. Be has of all of you and this site, I chose to fight. Each of you have given more than you will ever know, Blue, you gave me hope when I didn't think it existed, cardinal you stood by me in darkness always holding the light, katinka my racionale alter ego gave me sense, KimP and momof3 undying support, bighamguy courage and a witty sense of humor, pen your silent strength and to all of my new friends your simple hugs, notes of encourage and belief that my son would do it has meant more than you can imagine. I will never leave this site because this is where it began and this is my opportunity to pay it forward whenever I can. Thank you to you all with all my heart and soul. Xxoo
me! Love you all ! Dee
"I remember when I found this site": Early August 2011... by then we knew that our son (then 20) had a Heroin addiction... tore our hearts out...He had been arrested April, 2011, and released to probation, had an addiction "work up" and was waiting for the county to find a treatment program... Then one evening in July, he went for a ride with some "friends" that he'd just met... who had stolen a car... When stopped, he was found in possession of drugs (different than his addiction, says they weren't his) and sent to county jail 1 1/2 hours from home for 6 months. I was a complete wreck.. shattered...looking online for support for families of users... found all of you! I have been able to share things here that I could never have shared with my "community". However, since joining this group, I have grown so much in my strength, and have realized that "hiding someone's addiction just keeps it in the dark where the evil loves to be". I have been able to share here in my "real world", and even have hope to give to others... I am eternally grateful to all of you for your love and support.
To Cardinal, Dee, Dematt, Blue , you have a special place in my heart. Feel like we are "best friends" even though we have never met.
To our new members: There is always hope... and remember that by sharing your burdens it makes them easier to carry... this road of addiction is too hard to walk alone... let us walk with you... we care.
All of us may be in different situations, but at the end of the day, dealing with an addict remains the same
