My 22 yr old son has been on probation and has to do random drug testing. Every week he tests clean (well, he tests positive for his prescription medications (opiate) which is ok, right? Judge knows, he turns in the prescribed prescriptions and letter from Dr. as to why he needs this.
Last week I was upset with him because I just knew he took more than his prescribed dose. When I accuse him, he gets agitated and explosive. Long story short, Saturday night he took heroin. Come to find out, he has been selling his prescriptions and then buying heroin. Sunday night he came to me and asked me to get him some help. I found a treatment center out of state, went to court for permission for him to leave for at least 36 days and then had him on the flight by 6pm Tuesday.
When I am telling my family and friends all they do is shake their heads and ask me, "How did I not know? How did I miss the signs?" He was on heroin last summer and I told him he could not live at home unless he went to treatment, he went to detox and checked himself out after a few days. With the probation, I thought that was great because he has to drug test.
I feel so stupid! I did know something, I just thought he was taking to many of his Xanax or anti-depressants. Seriously, how can I be so stupid! I do not know how to deal with this guilt I have. I do not know how to help him.36 days isn't enough but this court thing will force him to come back here where all the triggers are. I guess this long story short thing can go on and on, I'

Maybe we don't WANT to see it. We love them and sometimes to "death". Sounds like when you DO know you set appropriate boundaries...its awesome he is going to rehab...in my opinion those who go to rehab have a better chance. They may not get it right away...but seeds are planted and they do eventually sprout.
I WISH my son could go to rehab. He is maintaining with Methadone and I heard today from his Dad that he is convincing them to raise his dose...which he PROMISED me he wasn't going to do. I am not going to say anything because I am becoming so burnt out...I'm ready to hand it over to a higher power.
Give yourself credit for taking the steps you have taken. You can't know everything he is doing especially if he is prescribed a drug that will give similar symptoms.
