Last year at this time my son fell asleep at the wheel of his car, on the way to his dealer to get some heroin. He crashed into the car in front of him. By some kind of miracle he didn't get hurt nor was anyone else hurt. Afterwards he was detoxing at home and mostly slept through Christmas. As you can imagine it was all I could do to not have a total breakdown.
Last Friday he was released from the rehab and is now at a sober living facility. He is totally embracing recovery and is also on Vivitrol for some insurance during the early months of his recovery. It has been 15 years since he was completely clean! We went to dinner and hung out on Friday and he is a different person, engaged and upbeat, due to what addicts refer to as the "recovery high". So I just wanted to share some good news for a change! I'm not naive about relapse and what can happen in the future but I'm going to enjoy and appreciate TODAY, and this Christmas without heartache and devastation.
I wish recovery for all families who are dealing with substance abuse.
Don't forget to take care of yourselves! I know our well being should not be dependent on their recovery. That's easier said than done, but it can be done with practice....

I never gave up hope, but I never put on the rose colored glasses.
And then, one day, it happens....will it stick? will they stay sober?
I kind of think of it like a big scare with cancer...are they in remission?
SO, celebrate it while you can, and tell him how proud you are of him.

My son was in detox last December as well and was transferred to a 30-day stabilization program on Christmas Eve. They weren't allowed passes for the first couple days, so he missed Christmas with us. He's still clean one year later, so that's really something worth celebrating!
I understand what you mean when you say that our well-being should not be dependent on their recovery. But isn't it such a relief to have this time of peace and hope?
