Oh oh oh. Just came back from the funeral for my friend's chronically depressed, alcoholic daughter. She was just 30 and had struck one of those deals with herself that she would only drink X times a week, then just X times a month, then even less. But every time she drank, it was a binge and she ended up unconscious. She had a good year, over all, which made this accidental death from suffocation much harder and more surprising to her family and community. I am reminded again how much we count on dumb luck to keep our children alive. We hope we can make decisions that make a difference. But in many ways, we are powerless - and just lucky for every day we have with our children still alive and driving us crazy.
