I was watching Dr. Drew last night and he had on Dr. Sanjay Gupta who is doing a show to air this Sunday Nov 18 ( not sure what time I believe it was 8 p.m.) anyway the just of the show is the OPIOD epedemic that is sweeping our country. Some of the facts that were discussed were For the 1st time ever accidental overdose has now surpassed the ratio of people killed in car accidents. The United States is responsible for 80 percent of all the worlds narcotic perscriptions! A person dies every 19 minutes in this country from an accidental overdose thats 3 every hour! Enough narcotic perscriptions are written in this country to medicate every man woman and child every four hours for 4 weeks! I wish i could say how shocked I am by this information but unfortunately I am not. I personally know many people who are or have been addicted to these pills not to mention the the 6 kids that my son has known that have overdosed and died from these pills. We really need to get this epidemic under control. I do have empathy for the people out there that are truly in need of these pills for pain management due to legitimate causes but this class of drugs has done so much damage that the government really needs to do something one last interesting fact that Dr, drew pointed out that the people who do have legitimate need for these pills are really not being helped by them because of the tolerance built up by longterm use they start to actually have the opposite affect the pain actually becomes worse then when started on it . I don't have the answer but I am just glad to see people who may be able to turn this around are finally starting to take notice former President Bill Clinton is also taking on the cause and the more light that is shed on this subject the better! Unfortunately for some the cat is already out of the bag but if we could prevent this problem from taking out future generations we will be doing a great thing. I have written my state senator and other legislators in regard to this subject and I urge everyone to do the same. Hope is alive! Dee
