Families & Friends Of Addicts Support Group
Addiction affects more than just the individual. This community is dedicated to the families and friends of individuals suffering from any form of addiction. Mental health professionals are increasingly considering alcoholism and addiction as diseases that flourish in and are enabled by family systems. Family members react to the addicted person with particular behavioral...
You didn't say what he is addicted to, but I can tell you that many substances can lower sex drive, and can definitely reduce sexual performance in men, including erectile dysfunction. I have firsthand experience knowing that simple things like alcohol or benadryl can cause arousal problems. Perhaps that is part of his problem - and he feels embarrassed about it.
Start making little dates, turn off the TV and do something. If his addiction is so bad he sits around and does nothing all the time encourage him to get help. Let him know you miss the intimate times.
From what I read about alcoholics (and I am not sure, but it seems like it would follow for all addicts) is that they get to feeling so badly about themselves, and ashamed that maybe they have just turned off that good feeling as well as the ones they are trying to drown out. If addiction is all about numbing...unless you had a sex addiction, it would seem that sex would be very unnumbing...know what I am trying to say?
Sounds like he is shut down. maybe he feels you will leave him and he is protecting himself, or that he is not worthy...talking about it is about the only way to find out.
He refuses to go to Marriage Counseling / Family ..His relationship with all of us has changed. My almost adult daughters do not know how good of a person he was( Or will he ever be that person again?)
I thought that once in went into treatment .,We as a Family would also have to go to therapy . I think that was his way of keeping us out of his recovery .Over a year later he was still hiding pills and lying right to my face >Why do they give addicts pills anyway ..He came out of the rehab with all kinds of Pills . We are Way past the point Of a date night .(.I would kill just to be able to talk about simple things) I do believe that he did have problems With Erctile dysfuntion ( He even suggested that I Need to go get Sewed up down there .WoW ( That was probably the Ambien talking) We Always Kissed hugged before leaving each other .. Now he rarely remembers to hug our young son goodbye:( While at the Dr Last Month (after OD'ing..I told the Dr .that My husband was an Amazing Person ..My husband then said "No. No I'm Not" . Im sorry Im all over the Place ,I just really appreicate the advice >>You all Are Awesome !
I just dont know whether he keeps around cause we cant afford to seperate ..Or is this just another way to CONTROL Me ..Because He cant control Himself?
Bottom line is its true that you can't help him. That's the worst position to be in, not being able to do anything about it. All you can do is take care of you. The only thing you can do is talk to him about treatment, have an intervention, etc. But ultimately, its up to him.
Good luck to you!!! I wish you the best!!!

The front part of the brain, or the administrative part is what controls higher level thinking. These areas include logic, analysis, morality and the ability to reach rational decisions based upon fact, truth, and global methods of viewing a situation. When meth is used, the front part of the brain gets ignored. It is as if reason, and logic get shut down.
The center part of the brain gets highly stimulated from meth. The user has an urgency to find something that defies logic, common sense, decency, and moral virtue in order to gratify the need that meth has created.
As time goes on, what served as adequate titillation, and excitement, soon becomes boring and mundane and the meth user needs more perverse and more bizarre stimulation to satisfy the need created by meth use.
Crack does the same. http://science.howstuffworks.com/crack4.htm
