Oh boy, what can I say? There's no magic pill. It may work for him if he truly wants to be clean.

My son tried methadone for almost two years and never seemed to progress. Then he switched to Suboxone in December, 2014 and has been on it ever since. He is doing significantly better. It has kept him very stable and away from all drugs except marijuana. He's not perfect, but he has come a long way. It's nice to see him actually acting sober. He's at the point where he's considering gradually tapering off, but will first work on getting treatment for his anxiety and depression.

Some people have found a way to abuse it. It can also be stolen from him if he doesn't keep it locked up. Some people also re-sell it or trade it for drugs. So, a key will be for him to find some new friends. I just read about a new version of the drug that is implanted and releases a low dose for six months. That would take care of the problems of re-selling and theft.

My son did very well (or so it appeared to me) on Suboxone for a couple of years. He worked full time and went to school, played his guitar and interacted with friends and family. He lost his job (thus his insurance) and got involved with a girl that was an addict and things went rapidly downhill from there. I believe that if Suboxone is helping him stay clean, go for it. I have known physicians and attorneys that have been successful but go to a methadone clinic regularly. I would gladly have paid for my son's Suboxone or methadone had I known he was no longer taking it, but he was a very private person and by the time I was aware, he was deep into his addiction. I don't know if that would have changed the outcome ultimately. Whatever will work for someone is great. They may come to a day where they can see clearly and decide to get off completely, but if it helps them live a "normal" and productive life, so be it.

My daughter has been on suboxin for 33 months and is working and having a functional life. She called today and has been tapering off and will be off it next week. Her doctor has given her something for anxiety and sleep. This makes me nervous but she said she is ready. All I can do is support her as long as she is sober. Very scary for me but I feel suboxin saved her life..

My daughter was on suboxone for over a year. Then she started to abuse it and use more than she was supposed to. Suboxone has an opiate in it so it's easy to abuse. It's very hard to get off it, at least my daughter had a tough time. In my opinion it is just trading one drug for another.
But if it helps your son then I would agree, let him try it. It may just save his life and he will be monitored while he is treatment. Good luck, I hope this works for him. I will keep you all in my prayers.
