Families & Friends Of Addicts Support Group
Addiction affects more than just the individual. This community is dedicated to the families and friends of individuals suffering from any form of addiction. Mental health professionals are increasingly considering alcoholism and addiction as diseases that flourish in and are enabled by family systems. Family members react to the addicted person with particular behavioral...
A somewhat different light came on for me too as I was reading it.
My family is filled with functioning addicts and enablers who don't get it.
The enablers behaviors are SO frustrating to me also.
I believe nothing will change with them (the enablers) either until they are ready ..no matter how much talking and explaining I do.
They think I am the bad guy for not pushing everything under the rug.
Our oldest {age 29} was in a long-term residential rehab which he entered in August. He was "released" in November due to a serious back injury. He came home and has been here with my husband and I since. While we have been waiting for his Medicaid application to be approved, his back has improved. Although he isn't using drugs or alcohol, he has gone back to smoking cigarettes, much to our disappointment. He have to wonder if this is a first backward step into addiction. The fear is always present.
Because of this back injury, he is unemployed {he's an auto mechanic by trade}, so we've been supporting him financially. He does get food stamps which helps with the grocery bill, but other than that, it's on us.
I TRULY NEED the advice of all you who have walked this path. What we are seeing is a gradual return of an arrogant attitude in him. When he first moved home, he got up early every morning, read & studies Scripture, read Christian books, etc. He's now sleeping later and later, watching more TV, etc. We see no motivation toward getting a job. The excuse is, "I can't really get a job with my back like this."
We are at our wits end - AGAIN. I thought he was finally getting his life together, but now I see a lot of his old traits coming to the surface. I am so burdened all I can do is cry.
To add to this mix, our younger son {age 26} is also dealing with a severe back injury {although he doesn't live with us}, and also suffers from severe depression. We believe he is self-medicating with God-knows-what. He barely works, never has money, and is about to get thrown out of his rental house. We will NOT allow him to come back home. {The only reason we allowed our older son to come back home was because we believed he was turning his life around.}
Where does a mother go to resign?
*SAD...so, so sad*
