My guess about that is he knows you have always been a rock solid supporter of him and he knows he is still messed up.
Whoever he is involved with now will most likely not last and he probably knows that.
He may say he is sober but he may just not be drinking but still takes various pills. I know my X was doing that and still is.
They seem like dual personalities -constantly being torn between their addict side and the good in them (which keeps getting more and more consumed by their addict side). Does that make sense to you?
most important though is to keep yourself going in another more stable and better direction for you.
My X has 0 contact with me ---more like he is already deceased!

Extremely difficult also- but I am moving forward keeping myself as healthy and good to myself as possible with the hope of finding someone better for me regardless of what my X does or does not do.
or the third option is he is just a nice person and doesn't want you to feel alone. See what happens when it gets back to him that you have been seeing someone quite a while...
meanwhile, go forward. Enjoy the flowers, and forget about him.
I think he's a narcissist and keeps you around. Seems he has moved on and keeping you in the hook.
I would move on too. Two years is a long time. Let go
It really is a perfectly reasonable thing to break off contact with an ex. You don't have to feel bad about it! The key is - cut him off with as little drama as possible. Good luck!
