Families & Friends Of Addicts Support Group
Addiction affects more than just the individual. This community is dedicated to the families and friends of individuals suffering from any form of addiction. Mental health professionals are increasingly considering alcoholism and addiction as diseases that flourish in and are enabled by family systems. Family members react to the addicted person with particular behavioral...
And if you feel guilty about that. Then think of it as modeling appropriate behavior to your daughter and grandkids.
Not excessive (going out every day..all day.)
Not minimal (never...never taking care of yourself).
But appropriate.
Kudos to you for taking care of the children. No need to have them be in any unsafe situations. So glad that they have you. BUT how exhausting.
Yes, Patti is right...take care of yourself. take care of your marriage. Then take care of the kids....addicts? last. they have to learn to take care of themselves.
Set boundaries. stick to them. and learn to detach. sometimes you just have to say "it isn't happening to me, it is happening to her."
So your daughter lives with you?
do you lock up your valuables?
does she know if she starts using she has to leave?
I didn't have to deal with that...my son was out. and when he got out of rehab he went to a halfway house and a sober living house....
I bet, after doing this, you could get a job like your old one back in a heartbeat when the time comes.
DO NOT give her an out.
you are doing everything right. perfect. no advice...only kudos.
When she first went there she wasn't allowed visits and she could not leave the property, they wanted her to focus on herself and her recovery. Slowly she was allowed to see her son and then she was allowed an overnight visit. I wasn't sure if I was going to let her come back home but as the months passed I began to see a change in her and some of my old daughter was coming back. I did allow her to come home a few weeks ago but this time I set very firm boundaries and told her that her first mistake was going to be her last and she would have to leave for good. I know its only been a couple of weeks but we are repairing our relationship, we've had a few bumbs in the road but nothing major. I'm trying to take it "one day at a time" and take care of me.
I can understand your feelings, I had them too, some days I'd be so mad at her I couldn't even stand the sight of her. I was heart broken too she could have had such a great life with a good man and beautiful son and she threw it all away for drugs. She's very lucky she's allowed to have partial custody of her son, she had to fight very hard in the courts for that!! I pray she hard learned from her mistakes because she knows she'll loose her son and me for good this time.
My best advice to you would be to try and take care of you. I know how hard it was for me with just 1 grandchild and you have 3. Your daughter is very lucky to have you and so are your precious grandchildren. Just do the best you can. I agree with blue let your husband deal with your daughter when he can, that will take the burden off you. Try and remember not to let this interfere with your marriage, make time for your husband when he's home.
I think you are doing a remarkable thing. Take care of yourself, I wish you all the luck in the world. I will keep you all in my prayers.
Hugs,
Pat
Now) for the first almost three years 5 days a week. Sometimes on the weekends too. Mostly because they needed some help and she wasn't born healthy so daycare wasn't an option. She's great now. Thank God. I know how exhausted I was with one. At
The end of the day I would just collapse. They joy she brought to
Me was immeasurable.
I honestly applaud you for raising three. They will never forget the love and care and sacrifices you have made for them. Just wanted to say what you are doing for these children is wonderful. Your daughter is blessed to have you.
