I am new to this group. My H has been sober for 3 years, her recently started drinking again. Even though alcohol was not his drug of choice it makes me nervous and worried that it will lead him down the old road again. He cheated on me this Summer and that is when he started drinking again, he says to help deal with the guilt he was feeling.
So anyway I am looking forward to meeting all of you.

Welcome to DS and the group. I will tell you that if my son started to drink again (after a little over 2 years) that he would also start using meth again which he has been free of for 10 months +. He has told me that he knows this is what would happen. Good luck. Sharon

A mind altering substance is a mind altering substance. In AA they call this "changing seats on the Titanic." Your husband has simply changed his Drug of Choice, the end result is the same.
You have reason to be concerned. It isn't the "guilt" he's feeling. It's the stress of the consequences. Addicts find an excuse in almost everything to justify their behavior and their use.

Addicts often cause 2 wars.
1. A inner war with ourselves.
2. A outer war with them.
Here's a quote from a book that I found very helpful to me.
"A solution to the inner war helpes solve the outer war as well."
Find peace in yourself.

Hey tan, WELCOME to our group. You will receive a lot of support here from folks that understand. Great advice before me. A drug is a drug is a drug. That is for sure.
Most important is that you seek recovery for you as addiction is a family disease and it affects all of us.

Hello, I have only been in this group for two weeks. Which was when my husband was forced to deal with his painpill addiction. One of the best things I have done for myself in these two weeks is join Alanon. The support they give me and the understanding that I have to worry about myself and my recovery have helped me more then even I understand. For my husband his NA group shows him that he did have an addiction and he can take control of his life. Plus... weekly meetings with a marriage counsler. I wish you the best in your recovery.

Not by Neal, my fiance, but during my first intense love relationship. the grief was almost unbearable.

Welcome to you. I am fairly new here also. My husband is an alcoholic ( I hesitate to say "recovering" because I don't think he's ever gone more than a week or so without drinking) he says he is not drinking but it is pretty clear that he is. He has never addressed any of the reasons he was drinking in the first place. Anyway, it is common for addicts to turn to a substance that was not their drug of choice, thinking that it is a "safe" alternative. It usually leads them back to what they were abusing in the first place, in my experience.
