What do you do when you know you played a role in the death of a loved oone. The last time I saw my father he told me he was depressed but was better now. This may not seem big but my father never ever ever spoke of depression or realy believed in it. So this was a big admition. And I never pushed it I never dug any deaper never stoped to hear what he was actualy saying, that he was still depressed. He killed himself two months after that. .... to top it off I had a sixteen year old neighbor come to me a week later telling me she hated her life and wanted to die , she was always one for dramaticsand was laughing when she said it. But I know better the number one thing they say is when its a joke they mean it. But I was so sensative about what my dad had just done I told her not to joke like that it wasn't funny. She ended up in the hospital a week later because I failed her when she came to me for help. .......so my question is what do you do when it actualy is your fault or you actualybdid play a role in it.... how do you ever forgive yourself
People can tell you till they are blue in the face that none of this is your fault...and they are right, but i know first-hand that it won't stop the feeling of guilt. Please just try to bare in mind that suicide is a very personal decision, and that you and I have very little control over the actions of another human being, even the one's we love the most. You had no way of knowing that your dad's depression would lead to suicide, nor that the neighbor girl was being anything but flippant. I work in a HS and students throw that word around like a plaything. After my son's suicide attempt I had a student tell me that if I wouldn't approve him on my Facebook he would kill himself. I know he was only messing around, but it should me up and I reported it to the school counselor.
I know how your feel. My son changed his siggy on his txt messages to ~emptyinside~ 3 days before his attempt. I did talk to him about it, but he blew it off like it was nothing, and I let it go, which I will forever regret.
Please, just try not to beat yourself up. It's a struggle, but it's necessary.
