I loss my nephew to suicide and have thought about him off and on all the time.He was a twin and his sister and him were adopted at a young age and I was not able to be around Chis until right before he killed himself.I use to take care of Chris and his twin when I was just a kid myself then after the divorce was final between their mom and my brother I no longer saw much of them.It seemed as if Chris and I were finally trying to get to know each other and then things began to change he became distant and would not talk to me or want to even see me.I was hurt and sadden by his actions then I was woken up one morning to be told my nephew had ended his life at the age of 20.I was so heart broken and so hurt that this beautiful young man felt he had nothing to live for.Chris's twin has not seen me for all most 10 yrs she lives not far from me but has not tried to have a relationship with me until now.Not sure if it will work out or not due to past family issues.But I am willing to at least try.Trying to at least be friends with my niece has made me think about Chris and I have realized he has been gone 13 yrs.I know for me it does not seem possible to me that it has been this long due to it only seemed like we were getting to know each other and then he was gone.And still my heart breaks from losing him.

Unfortunately, the mid-teens to early 20s is the time of emergence for serious mental illness. And your nephew certainly seems to have been suffering from it. This had a huge impact on his sister, huge. If she is reaching out to you, then this is your opportunity to offer her an open door: unconditional love, no judgment, affection, or whatever she seems to need.
