I lost my best friend to a drunk driving accident when we were 21 years old... I still miss her and cry over her death 24 years later... There is no time table for grief.
My father commtted suicide when I was 12. When I was 15/16 and in high school playing soccer, I felt so different. I thought, will I ever get over this...enough already! I'm now 30 and it's only been recently that I've allowed myself to feel the hurt and pain my father left behind. I've learned to let myself sit with my emotions and just let them be.
So I have something I want to share. I had a yoga teacher once tell me (after I shared with him my issue around my father) that suicide is really not that big of a deal...it just means they didn't get it right in this life but they might in the next. While this may be going against what most of us were taught...it really sat well with me.
The other thing is, I feel so close to my dad when I meditate, do yoga, or do anything that connects me with me. I've found this to be an extremely powerful and therapeutic practice. It's like he is living and I am able to help him through all his pain!
My sincerest best to you,
Katie
The thing that keeps me going the most is knowing that neither Steve or Derek would want me to have a miserable life missing them......they would want me to respect them now and stop questioning! Just find the courage to live each day and go on! Best of luck to you and i am here for you
The effects on my family has really taken a toll. Counseling has kept me sane. I just joined this web group. I'm learning that you sometimes need to take it just an hour at a time because your future can change at any minute. So just focus on now, tomorrow will fall into place.
I try to find my peace by knowing his pain is over with. And to be thankful what years I did have with him.
I loved your poem. I know what you mean by being scared. I too, am scared. But my new motto is DO IT SCARED. I find I'm braver than I thought. Besides what's the worse that can happen? I already feel the worse has happen.
