In case anyone needs information from someone who has been there I had malignant melanoma of the right eye over 20 years ago. At the time, only 1 person per million would have this ailment. Peter Falk had this as a child that is why he has only one eye, the cure at that time was to remove the entire eye. Drs Shields of Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia (husband and wife team) pioneered a new surgery where they actually sew a radioactive plaque on the tumor which destroys the cancer. The only shadow over you after this is that you need to be monitored every year. The routine I established was to see a local eye surgeon and 6 months later return to Wills Eye. This way you were checked twice a year. The only other problem I had was financial in that the insurance companies still penalize me even though it was so long ago. After surgery my vision would split so I would see two of everything which caused me to stop driving because I did not know which truck to pass. Also the bonus was that when the images come together I can see flat things as 3 dimensional (no need for special 3D glasses). The vision in the right eye would and did diminish so I am now legally blind in the right eye. The cancer can be treated quite easily without chemo if it is caught early which is one good reason for an annual eye exam - it grows slowly so the earlier found the less chance of the tumor bursting into the body.
