Esophageal Cancer Support Group

Esophageal cancer is malignancy of the esophagus. There are various subtypes. Esophageal tumors usually lead to dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), pain and other symptoms, and is diagnosed with biopsy. Small and localized tumors are treated with surgery, and advanced tumors are treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or combinations.

Status update

My husband was diagnosed stage three edinocarcinoma at the stomach/ esoph junction. He had six weeks chemo, 25 radiation treatments and surgery in April and he is now four months cancer free. He just had his second scan and it is clear. He is more or less back to normal, just a little tired and a little scared. He eats four times a day and that is enough to maintain his weight. My heart goes out to all who are touched by this horrible disease. Thank you for sharing your stories with me, it has been extremely helpful and supportive. My heart breaks for all those who have not made it. We know it is too early to say we have beat this disease. We definitely have a different outlook on life. Stay healthy, everyone!

Thanks so much for keeping us updated on you and your husband's story. So far so good! It's so reassuring to hear some good news--not all these stories have happy endings and I'm always grateful when hear something encouraging. There's always hope!

That's exactly the same diagnosis and treatment plan my husband had (except he had surgery first, then rads and chemo). We are approaching the two-year cancer free mark in November. This definitely IS survivable! Eating is a bit different now for him (capacity down, but getting better all the time), but his energy is back to full strength and, unless you knew - you'd never know he'd had such a close call! He was given 6 months to live without treatment. That was 22 months ago!

Margi I remember when you first came to the board. It's hard to believe it's already been 2 years, but time seems to pass so quickly. It's sometimes hard for me to believe it's been 5 years for me (come Nov. from surgery) and yet other times it seems like a long time ago. I'm so happy your hubby is doing well - YEH!!!

Brend, you, Fred, Cindy and others were SUCH a big help to me. I was terrified. You all made both Mike and I feel so much better and, for that, we will always be thankful!

The fact he is doing so well, already is a very good sign. I have my 4 year appointment tomorrow for blood and exam then endoscopy, colonoscopy and Pet scan in next couple of weeks...ugh...ML.

Martin, I'm with you on that "ugh" thought. It's kinda easy to go on with life and not give it as much thought, but when testing time comes - it can't help but be a reminder of where we were & that we don't want to get back in that whirlwind. At least that's how testing time affects me - still 5 years later. But, we know how critical testing is & continued treatment, if that's what is in order. I'll be lifting some extra prayers for you & know you'll be relieved to get an all clear!

Margi, thanks. There are so many here who have helped me along these 5 years too! You, too, have been a great support for so many. We're so lucky to have this board with something - none of us wanted to deal with, but had that warmth of others letting us know they're here for us and care for us and are so willing to help. :-) I'm so glad Mike is doing well :-)
