Esophageal cancer is malignancy of the esophagus. There are various subtypes. Esophageal tumors usually lead to dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), pain and other symptoms, and is diagnosed with biopsy. Small and localized tumors are treated with surgery, and advanced tumors are treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or combinations.

Just had my 3 month checkup. CAT scan and blood work all normal. No evidence of cancer! Yea. its funny on how the whole hour drive to the appointment i was thinking, will this be my last day of thinking i am beating this beast. will i get bad results. Just anxiety, i know, but it happens. so all the way home i was thinking NO i am beating this and i will continue to fight and enjoy the next three months before my next appointment. LIVE in the moment. Have a good day everyone and you will continue to be in my prayers... CIndy

Great news Cindy! I know the feeling of anxiety before the check up and the feeling of great relief afterwards. Congratulations. I think we all feel better when we hear this kind of good news!

Congratulations, Cindy!!!! I think we all know that pre-doctor feeling of anxiety & dread. I tell myself that the moment I see my oncologist's
expression when he walks in the room, I will know. So far, so good - 2 clean PET scans & one coming up. I've wondered why some of us get CAT & others PET scans..........anyone???

I've had cat scans only - post-surgery - except one pet not long after surgery. Also the cat is not always chest, abdomen and pelvis. Regarding pet vs cat in my case my Dr. said they do the cat. If there's any clarification they need or something shows up suspicious then they order a pet. Also, doing just chest & abdomen sometimes just gives me less radiation exposure which he seems to watch too. I know some people seem to post they get pet & cat at certain check-ups. I imagine it's just different ways of thinking.

Brenda, i had only the cat scan also since surgery. My doctors said that it was less radiation and that if there was something that showed up they would do a PET scan to check it out. Not sure myself why some drs say CAT and some say PET, i guess all drs are different like all of us respond different to the treatments. CINDY

Yeah, Cindy, and some people say they have both the CAT & PET scans at their check up. Well, I know in the end our Drs. (great Drs.) are trying to help us get the best results of staying cancer free and beating EC. We all want that for each other :-) Brenda

of course i dont mind telling you my initial treatment. I was diagnosed August of 09. I had 28 radiation treatments and 2 rounds of iv cisplatin and twice for 96 hours i wore a fanny pack of continuous 5FU. then i had a esophagectomy. they took all of my esophagus and a third of my stomach. if you read my long version on my journal it tells a little more detail.
