My husband Dan just finished his first regimen of Epirubicin, Oaxaliplatin, and 5FU (this one 9 weeks straight). The PET scan showed the one spot on his kidney completely gone! The tumor in his esophagus has mildly shrunk, and so has the tumors in his stomach. Some other lymph nodes are now not lighting up...so good news. They did not restage it yet, but we are now on the path to surgery when 9 weeks ago they would not consider him for surgery, so we are hopeful. He will start chemo/radiation within the next ten days as they do not want to give the EC any time to regroup and grow. I wanted to let everyone know as this has been a hard journey, but never give up unless the patient says it is time. Even at stage 4, which was his original diagnosis, he has hope and a plan for surgery. The radiation oncologist is being very aggressive as well. Please don't let your Dr.s be timid about this insidious disease! And please research others who are going thru this or who have gone through this. While everyone reacts differently to chemo, we are all in this boat together! The whole is much bigger than the sum of it's parts! I am so glad I joined this forum and so glad I am not letting any Dr. intimidate me! This is a fight for life and if something looks like a new kind of bullet, ask, ask, and ask again....or go somewhere else. More good news is since he has lost a lot of weight, he no longer requires his high blood pressure medicine! And we put him on insulin (which I had to push for), and his diabetes is now under control and blood sugars are normal or close to it. I ignored the periphery problems for too long and I strongly advise anyone to not do what I did. There are many solutions to these seemingly cumbersome probs. such as diabetes, when you are fighting cancer, but it all adds up to support! I will prolly be on here real soon with side effects of radiation concerns, but right now we are enjoying this victory!
