Esophageal Cancer Support Group
Esophageal cancer is malignancy of the esophagus. There are various subtypes. Esophageal tumors usually lead to dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), pain and other symptoms, and is diagnosed with biopsy. Small and localized tumors are treated with surgery, and advanced tumors are treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or combinations.
My husband was diagnosed 4/13. He had chemo and radiation, then surgery. The surgical pathology showed one lymph node still had cancer. So, a few weeks after surgery he started chemo again. He will finish in two weeks. We were so disappointed when we found out the cancer wasn't gone. Basically the affected lymph node is gone, but the worry is that some cancer cells have migrated to other parts of the body. Like Dan says, it's a very aggressive cancer. And, I also agree that we all need to live the life we have here and now. My husband is extremely weak from the current chemo. However, we've put a deposit on a cruise in the spring. He can barely walk right now, but we're planning on getting him back in shape again. The cruise gives us a goal to work toward. His experience with cancer has made me look at life differently. I want to enjoy my time with him. I realize that we all don't really know how much time we have. Why not make each day count?
