Esophageal Cancer Support Group
Esophageal cancer is malignancy of the esophagus. There are various subtypes. Esophageal tumors usually lead to dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), pain and other symptoms, and is diagnosed with biopsy. Small and localized tumors are treated with surgery, and advanced tumors are treated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy or combinations.
I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone. There are several people here who are very encouraging with their stories of survival - even those that were diagnosed stage 4, so don't give up hope! One thing I would suggest if you are not at a "high volume" hospital, find one if possible. By that I mean somewhere that they treat this particular cancer often. Even if you go to the nearest major hospital to get another opinion, that would be beneficial even if you can't get there for treatment.
Hang in there.

I was diagnosed Stage IV esophageal cancer (with liver metastasis) in late January 2013. I was given a 40% chance of surviving 1 year from diagnosis. I started chemo in February 2013 and am still having it. All tumors shrank over the first 12 months and my cancer is now 'stable'. I currently am fit, active and healthy (apart from the cancer of course!) and I'm making the most of the time I have with my loved ones and doing things I enjoy to do.
Yes the schedule will be hectic, particularly in the first few months.
I echo dhenth's comment regarding a youngish body being able to cope with the chemo etc (which can be gruelling) - I was 49 and reasonably fit at the time of diagnosis and I believe that was an advantage for me.
There will be ups and downs, but try to stay strong and don't give up hope. I will be thinking of you and your dad.

Have a beautiful day all of you wonderful people.
