I'm amazed no one, other than me, has responded to this. I am a scheduler programmer for a fortune 100 company. What I do picked me, as I moved my way up in data processing. Since I have simple and complex seizures it may not be noticable anything is going on unless I fall over at my desk. (yes, this has happened on occasion) Usually if I'm having problems it would be more with the medication I have just started taking and not with the seizures itself. Epilepsy is by law a handicap and employers cannot discriminate against handicap, however you do have to realize you do still need to do your job. I did once have a manager that once he found out I was having problems he pushed me harder, then did his best to have me fired. He even went as far as to tell my supervisor he was going to put me in a lower position 'in case' something were to happen. Two years later he was still bring up something that had happened while I was was changing medications until finally I had to take it to Human Resources. When we had a meeting with HR he stated my inability to do a certain function. When he was asked to give an example he said, "Well let's take two years ago." He was told by HR, No, let's take now. What is an example." Then my supervison came in and said he wanted to put me in a lower position because of what happened two years ago. The super came right out and said he was discriminating against me because I have epilepsy and has said to him he didn't want me involve in certain projects because 'something may happen'. HR ended the meeting and of course I don't know what was said to him in private, but he never gave me a hard time again. That was two years ago and he has since been fired. He was the only manager I have had a problem with. As I said, it went on for two years, but he made my life hell during that time. Yes, I thought of quiting but I too many years already invested in the company, was in my 40's and didn't was to loose my pension. It helled that I had the backing from my department and supervisor to go after him and fight for myself. I now have a great manager and it really helps with your self esteem. Because I haven't been driving in 8 months I have been fortunate in having a position where my manager has said I can come in 2 days a week and work the others from home.

Now I have a great manager and it really helps with your self esteem. congrats to you. some people are insane. i do wonder why people who abuse drugs and people are treated with love and respect by
companies.

thanks for replying katie b. i was a respiratory therapist for 18 years at various hospitals including johns hopkins who did treat me with respect.The last 2 hospitals i worked for had problems with me. I usually worked hard to not let anyone know what was happening. i had a few friends that knew. my seizures changed from having grand mals at night at home to having complex partials in the day.

same thing happened to me... i used to only have grand mals at home mostly... but it was the grand mals... and as time has passed my seizures have changed.. my memory isnt the same.. im having smaller seizures all the time everyday now too.. it has played how people look at me at work.. also how i look at myself as an employee.. its harder to keep up.... its just plain ol embarrassing.. i have even talked about it with some of the people i work with.. the changes they have noticed over time.... i understand.. i feel incompitent almost.. inadiquet. i feel like im alwas trying to hide it. and work with computers mostly at my job. i meanm job are really limited roght now for me with how many i have a day. im not so sure if i like talking about it.. i get so ,mad at myself. anyway good luck to you.
