Epilepsy & Seizures Support Group
Epilepsy (often referred to as a seizure disorder) is a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. It is commonly controlled with medication, although surgical methods are used as well. Seizures (or convulsions) are temporary abnormal electrophysiologic phenomena of the brain, resulting in abnormal synchronization of electrical neuronal...
Be patient with mom, she is scared stiff of losing you to college and literally losing you to an accident. I dont think its a bad idea to point out to your mom that the having an accident is a possibility but not a probability. BUT ABOVE ALL....keep cool talking to your mom, she's a human being with feelings, try to be as calm and logical as you can. No hissy fits! Good luck and God bless.
I Agree Seizure Free 2 YRS is Fantastic. And you have earned the rite to drive.
But, Honey, My daughter is 40 & I Worry about her crossing the Street. Her seizures have only been controlled for a yr, now. :) So go Lightly on Mom. Some Day you will be a Mom Too. Remember "Goes Around, Comes Around" So don't be causing your Mom too much more grief over this. She Loves you. That's all there is to it. Overprotective. Well, you say you are 'independent', wanna be Independent. How did you get that way? W/ her guidance, if you think about it. :)
Love Candi
If you still have 4 months till you do turn 18, why not use this time to take care of all the business you need to do before getting your liscence.
I have had epilepsy since I was 9 yrs. old and am now 43, so I too had to grow up all my life with it. I was 25 before I got my liscence and that is because I went and got it myself because not even my husband would help me get it.
I was the most careful driver ever and I followed all the rules, then for some reason, I have no idea why, but my seiz. started to come back. I continued to be careful while driving, but one day on my way home from a friends house I had a grand mal while driving. I woke up in my car, behind the wheel, in the skirting of someones trailor house and police all around me.
I was sooooo thankful for being alive, but more than anything I was thankful that I had not hurt (or worse) anyone else. Now that was 12 yrs ago and I have not driven since the idea scares me to death.
Yeah, your mother is probably being "overly concerned" (at least in your eyes), but there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking extra precautions and being extra careful when it comes to something like this.
Take care and I wish you the best of luck with your driving.
Some of those government employees can be a bit overzealous in applying the law. Get a letter from your neurologist but forget about the silly EEG they want you to take. EEGs have a legitamate purpose. That is not one of them.
First, chose your language more carefully, I understand that you are very angry and very frustrated. If you want people to hear you, make it a more pleasant experience.
Second, needing to learn to drive before college. In college I rode a bicycle every where, since I did not have a car of my own. Besides it is healthier and cheaper. I also live in a University town. Parking is difficult and expensive there. A lot of students ride buses or bicycles, judging from the numbers I see doing so.
Then, have you thought about getting a professional to educate you about driving. I took driver training when I started, as did my girls (no emotional attachments). More objective about your performance and risks.
Also, concerning leaving home. There are problems every where you can not leave them behind. And from my experience the older you get the more problems you have.
Lastly, disappointment is extremely common in life. Learning to deal with it effectively, is a skill best learned early.
Do you really think that you have the ability to keep bad or unpleasant things from happening to you ever? I sure did not. It was not my choice.
I hope, this helps you think through this a little better.
Stillable!
First, get a drivers manual and memorize "EVERYTHING". By knowing all there is to know, no one can use that as an excuse for you not to drive.
Do you work? If you do or if you don't put aside a little "kitty" and save up the money that it will cost to take drivers ed. That's what I had to do. My husband wasn't going to pay for it and my mother didn't want me driving either, so she wouldn't loan me the money...I had to start a little savings.
Quite honestly taking public transportation can be a lot better because of the price of gas; however, I do know it's nice to say (and show) your "Drivers License".
Now, one thing that makes me REALLY mad about my epilepsy and the people around me who claim they care is the fact that I want to go to Las Vegas and even though I have enough money saved to go, I can't because I have to have someone with me just incase I have a siez.
Now we both know that these people do care, but OMG don't you wish we could do just one little thing on our own.
I just had a siez. at work a couple of days ago and fell and cracked one of my ribs...Just one more reason for those people to believe I need someone with me to make sure I don't get hurt.
Now, just keep your eyes focused and show everyone around you that you are perfectly capable of getting your liscence and that you are responsible enough to have and keep one.
One thing that parents have a problem with (which is totally understandable) is when it comes to the kids getting liscences the cost of insurance gos way up and then a new driver with epilepsy will make that cost go SKY HIGH.
Keep up the positive thinking and let me know how things are going.
Have a great day.
You just want to concentrate on being seizure free and stay on moms good side. ;)
Have you tried getting your permit? It's been a long time since I have gotten my liscence, so I don't remember, can you just go in and take your written test 1st and then the drivers test later?
I would LOVE to move to vegas, but for right now I would settle for just visiting once a yr. lol.
I work very hard on my feet all yr long, so a vacation like that would be just soooooo awesome!
You take care, and I will talk to you soon.
