This is the medication I\'m using now and it\'s working great. Haven\'t had any seizures with convulsions for over a year now. I\'m on a high dosis though, 3x500mg morning/3x500mg evening.

that is very encouraging - my son has been on dilantin for about 10 years and after more seizures than i knew about...is changing to keppra- he was a firefighter & after the last seizure just could not continue that line of work - too dangerous....judy

Hey, I am on Keppra too. I started using it I think 5 years ago. I used to only be on Carbatrol but that wasn\'t working well alone. I had a 24 hour test taken where I had wires glued to my head and had to travel around with a little machine box that took my brain waves. We found that my brain was reacting more to Keppra than the carbatrol. It is great, good choice and good luck.

I\'ve been on Phenytoin for the last 3 years and have never had a seizure on it. I recently had a neurologist suggest switching to Keppra due to the lesser side effects. I\'m a little nervous to switch as Phenytoin controls my seizures 100% and I have no real noticable side effects, however, looking long term (I was diagnosed with Juvenile Epilepsy which will like be with me for life), Keppra seems a better choice as it\'s passed through the kidneys rather than the liver. So far Keppra leaves me feeling drunk almost but I JUST started it and have heard that most side effects subside after a few weeks..

I am taking 1000mg in the morning and 1000mg at night along with 100mg of neurontin and it seems to be working well has reduced my breakthrough down to maybe only one or two a month

My husband was on Keppra for a year ...one of the side effects to this drug is depression. Many have success with Keppra however, my husband became depressed and that is just not him. Drug was discontinued and depression was gone.

my husband took keppra for a very sure time. he had 11 grand mal seizures in a week while on it.

I have been on Keppra, 1500mg BID for the last 4 years. Currently it is in conjuction with 600mg BID of Trileptal. I had no trouble weaning on to Keppra and was told Keppra could not be used as a mono treatment, but had to work with something else. Was using Depecote but started having seizures again. Couln't handle the higher dose of Depecote - tremors, weight and thought control. Still having problems with the combo of Keppra and Trileptal, but still trying to get the dose adjusted. I have found Keppra the easiest to adjust to. Others caused many side effect the Keppra didn't have.

My husband was put on Keppra Fall 2005. He had been hospitalized with another blood clot. (at this point he had gotten back on Dilantin and wasn't taking anything to thin his blood-only occationally drinking sassafrass tea which is a natural blood thinner)

He had trouble balancing the Dilantin in his system-500mg/day was not enough and 600mg was too much. He experienced lots of studdering and drop seizures(where he'd be walking and his legs would give out and he'd fall or if he was sitting, he'd drop whatever was in his hand.) The Keppra has eliminated the drop seizures and the studdering.(praise God)

The neurologist tried to take him off the Dilantin, but his gm seizures increased. He put him back on Dilantin at 400mg/day,but he still was having a gm or 2 a week. He would not increase his Dilantin. We went to a neurosurgeon who tested him and added Depakote. His anger, mood swings and lack of reasoning decreased considerably. They again tried to eliminate the Dilantin, but the gm seizures increased. So they again put him back on Dilantin at 400mg. He still was experiencing gm seizures, but less often. Increasing the Depakote didn't help much, so his Neurologist increased his Dilantin back up to 500mg and he seems to be doing well with this. He is taking 2-750mg keppra twice a day; 2-100mg tabs Dilantin am and 3-100mg pm; 1-500mg Depakote am and 2-500mg pm; and 1-325mg Bayer Aspirin(for his blood clots-they also put a filter in his main vein to catch clots from going into his lungs, heart and head)

My husband also during this time of med changes gained weight. He was probably around 230lbs and is now at 265lbs. The neurologist told him that Keppra as well as Depakote would cause him to gain weight, but I think it was put on because he was no longer working and was sitting around watching tv all the time and being depressed because he couldn't work. He still sits around in the evenings after work(of course he's out of a job again) because he's too tired to do anything else and he has to get his leg up due to his stasis ulcer on his ankle.

Keppra controls my seizures very well. The problem is that my depression became much MUCH worse. I'd been depressed for about ten years, and after about 1.5 years after I began taking Keppra, I was literally with a plan to kill myself. The anti-depressant Effexor XR wasn't doing any good. I'm working with a therapist and my neurologist to get around my depression that's been exacerbated by the Keppra.

the doctor has me on keppra 750 mg twice a day but without my dilantin neither would work on its own. now my seizures are under control and i live somewhat of a happy life. but i do have depression and if i was to go on a medication for depression which i am choosing not to for many reasons it would effect all my medications that i am on. i do suggest get blood work done every six months cause sometimes your levels can go up and down and their are side effects to the medicine that are mild to me but to someone else might not be

Im allergic to it.

I took it and was seizure free on it from Nov '01-Feb '06, 5 beautiful years. I had no side effects as far as I can remember, but I had a seizure Feb 18 '06. So I've been off of it for a yearish.
