Epilepsy & Seizures Support Group
Epilepsy (often referred to as a seizure disorder) is a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. It is commonly controlled with medication, although surgical methods are used as well. Seizures (or convulsions) are temporary abnormal electrophysiologic phenomena of the brain, resulting in abnormal synchronization of electrical neuronal...
Oh & my son doesn't typically bite his tongue, nor does he lose control of his bladder (& like I said he has had many seizures - for about 2 years he had them at least 2+ times a week & his always went into grand mals (aka tonic clonics) )
Here are some types & descriptions of other seizures:

One particularly interesting statement in my reading said that if there is a reversible cause of a seizure (such as abnormal sodium in the blood) and we eliminate it and have no more seizures we do not have epilepsy. So there is a line that must be crossed, to be epileptic, and having seizures, or perhaps more likely, a seizure, isn't enough to win that diagnosis. But this would also seem to suggest the possibility that even some of us who already have a diagnosis of epilepsy simply haven't identified the cause of our seizures, and so haven't learned how to prevent them to relieve ourselves of the condition. It follows from there, I suspect, that not all the causes of seizure are even known of yet.
But this diagnosis is built upon a lot of subjective factors that vary for each of us. Stress is certainly on a threshold all its own, and I suppose it would therefore be possible that those with a theoretically equal propensity for seizure that I have, while living with far less stress, might never have a seizure at all and thus never receive the diagnosis. Unless we can safely conclude that someone who is not epileptic (or o/w not prone to non-epileptic seizures), can withstand massive stress and never have a seizure? If not, then I suppose it's possible I could be "epileptic" for the very unlucky fact that I have a higher-stress life than the hypothetical other I'm comparing to.
It appears my own little description I wrote above sounds familiar to you guys. But when I read the descriptions of the signs of partial seizure online they for the most part do not sound familiar to me. Perhaps these things are far more complex in their variables than I even know.
I have a chronic tightness/stiffness in my neck that sometimes makes me want to shoot myself. It too is difficult to describe, but feeling like my head isn't on straight wouldn't be too inaccurate. I can feel mild convulsions in my head just thinking or talking about this. Even researching it does me no favors. Perhaps it's the flickering of the computer monitor. Sometimes I don't know why I keep trying to analyze a thing that is so complicated and unwilling to reveal itself of its causes.
An ambulatory EEG seems in the cards for me in the near future. My psy-doctor claimed that I could wear a "cap" on my head for 24-hours instead of the gluey electrodes but this might have been wrong. How much hair am I going to lose from wearing these things? I searched this forum for "ambulatory EEG" and found very little about them. I wonder how many of you folks have received EEGs as part of your diagnosis, or put differently, if any of you have received a diagnosis without one?
I got my dx of Epilepsy w/out an EEG. The only tests the AF ran was blood tests & a CT Scan. But, I had a Gran mal during morning warmups, in front of the whole squad. So, I assume they dx me on eye witness reports. All my EEG's have been 'Normal' as far as I can recall. No cause was ever found. But, that ain't unusual, cuz, 65% of us are listed as 'no cause found'. I think that percentage would be lower if DRS would Just run tests for Hereditary Causes. :( Which they claim are toooo expensive & would rather rely on tests that may or may not show activity/abnormalities &/or on patient History.
Sodium Levels: If that is the Only cause then yes seizures Mite be eliminated. But, my daughter's Sodium Levels Were too high 1 yr, (Several yrs after DX). They corrected the problem & she Still had seizures. She Did have underlying causes. Stress/Anxiety & Hormones. Plus, she is the Only one in our family who Was determined to have 'hereditary Epilepsy'. But, According to My Neuro, that doesn't mean Mine are due to Hereditary causes.
This may or may not have been included in the Info I gave you. :) There are over 40 different Types of seizures. Only 20+ are recognized here in the US. I think one site did say there are over 2000 different causes of seizures. And a # of Triggers. These sites only list 'common' causes/triggers. So, I would say yes, there are causes & triggers 'unique' to some PPL & to some forms of Epilepsy.
Everyone has what is known as a brain seizure threshold. It is higher in some, than others. So, your theory of Stress is correct. It all Depends on Our seizure thresholds. And a variety of Factors can Lower that Threshold, making us More prone to seizures. Or to Stress causing the Seizures.
No, not all the facts/causes have been determined. I subscribe to medicalnewstoday.com, a weekly newsletter, that informs me of every New cause the Researchers find. Various Missing Genes are reported at least once a yr as Links/probable causes of Ep.
You have only had 1 seizure, that you know of. 2 Seizures w/in 1 yr Qualifies as Epilepsy. :) But, what you described above & in your last post, (the feelings you get while exposed to Fluorescent Lites & comp) sounds like Photosensitive seizures. (More Info on the 2betrhealth site, for sure. Search the medline plus site, too.) So, it may be that you Have had more than 1 'episode'.
I suggest you start a Journal. Note activities B4, during & after any 'odd' feelings. Time those 'incidents' , if possible or have someone else do so. Note foods/bevs consumed, also. This will help you determine any patterns or triggers, in the future. And it is a Very Useful 'tool' for you & your DRS. :)
An ambulatory EEG only lasts 24 to72 hrs. I don't think you will lose much hair at all. But, at least you Have the 'Cap' version. I had to wear the wires & glue w/ mine last yr. :)
Bud, the best you can do is the same as the rest of us more 'experienced' do. Take it One Day at a Time. Time & Patience may Provide you w/ answers, someday. Or you mite remain 'clueless' as I do. But, you Can/Will learn to Cope. Even if you Never have another seizure. Learn to 'Cope' w/ Life, itself. :)
