Endometriosis is a common medical condition where the tissue lining the uterus is found outside of the uterus, typically affecting other organs in the pelvis. The condition can lead to serious health problems, primarily pain and infertility. A major symptom of endometriosis is pain, mostly in the lower abdomen, lower back, and pelvic area.
Because of my rectal bleeding during my period my doctor wanted me to see a gastroenterologist before my lap in a couple weeks. I went in for my colonoscopy consult today. The GI wants to do it during my period as to better identify the source of bleeding.
Unfortunately, my period is due in 3 days. Which means I'm having a colonoscopy Monday.
I'm not really all that nervous about the procedure however, I'm terrified about the prep. I get sick to my stomach at the thought. I have to do two rounds of golytely (6pm and 3am) after 4 dulcolax and a day of liquid diet. Ugh.
And I have to do all of this during the monthly hell I call my period. And just to be a whiner I was scheduled a three day weekend (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday) at work that I was so excited about. :(
Seriously though, I know I need the procedure and I'm happy the doctors are working quickly with me and being so thorough. And because I already had those days off it wasn't an inconvenience at work.
Has anyone had to do it? And how bad is it?

I was a nervous wreck before I did the prep and actually was concerned that it wouldn't work....I did the full day of the liquid diet....made homemade chicken broth, it was awesome!
Then I had to take the prep twice the night before and the morning of....my tummy got really bloated, but nothing happened, went to bed and when I woke up to take the morning dose, I was immediately running for the RR. But there was no real pain or cramping.
My suggestion is keep your magazines or books handy in the RR and just hang out there once things get going.
Crossing my fingers that the prep isn't as bad as you are anticipating!!

It is true, the prep was not fun. I think everyone is different though, I find the prep to be awful, I was up all night with both, but I have a friend who has one every year (due to some sort of genetic risk for colon cancer) and she has no problem with her prep. Also my best friends boyfriend had one and he didn't have an issue with it at all.
As for the procedure itself, I mostly don't remember it (I do remember some parts), and most people don't remember it at all. They give you a nice cocktail of medication (usually Benadryl, Ativan and versed or Demerol, but it depends on the place).
A few tips...not to be tmi, but if you are able to invest in some baby wipes and use that instead of TP I would recommend that. Also be prepared to sleep when you get home from the procedure, the drugs will likely make you very groggy for a while.
I also second KDeezy on the eating the unhealthy stuff (they do recommend you eat lightly after, but I didn't and I was fine), there was nothing more satisfying than the awesome burrito I got after my procedure. :-)
