Endometriosis Support Group
Endometriosis is a common medical condition where the tissue lining the uterus is found outside of the uterus, typically affecting other organs in the pelvis. The condition can lead to serious health problems, primarily pain and infertility. A major symptom of endometriosis is pain, mostly in the lower abdomen, lower back, and pelvic area.
She's definitely a remarkable woman and advocate for those with endo. She's also an example of someone who had a hysterectomy (at age 23 in 1978) under the false pretense that it's a cure for endo. It didn't end the pain and she continued to have surgery after surgery, 20 in all. The pain didn't end until she had a pain pump installed in 2006. And now she's left with immune problems that can result in illnesses such as lupus. Granted some of these problems may be from the endo and losing part of her colon but ovary removal also causes many health problems.
I was surprised that she's only 58; she looks quite a bit older. The loss of my ovaries caused me to age overnight and I suspect that's at least part of the reason she looks older too. The ovaries in an intact woman produce hormones into her 80's and HRT can't totally replace what was lost...definitely something to keep in mind when considering female organ removal.
Thanks, great and important article!
@fighting4change - thanks for letting us know how important it is to think long and hard about having our female parts removed. I recently found out I have Adenomyosis and the doc says the only way to rid the pain is to remove the uterus....NOT. My pain isn't debilitating and I'm not ready to go that route.
