Empty Nests Support Group
Empty nest syndrome is a general feeling of depression and loneliness that parents/other guardian relatives feel when one or more of their children leave home. Empty nest syndrome has become more prevalent in modern times, as the extended family is becoming less common than in past generations, and the elderly are left living by themselves.
You have had so much change. You seem to have a healthy thought pattern. The fact that you came here and are reaching out so shortly after realizing the major change. So kudos to you for that!!
I am not always quick to seek assistance when I am feeling stressed or hurting or lonely. YOu are going to get through this and I certainly hope and pray that 2017 will be a year with less loss.
I only had about 1 year of time truly alone after I moved out of my parents house before I was married. I do remember how tough that year was, vaguely. It would be so easy for me to give you advice on what you could do to fill up your time, how lucky it is that you can make decisions for just you because you only have to answer to yourself and all. But that is just platitudes.
There is just something about you that makes me think that you are going to plug away and find that purpose you need, you will adjust to cooking and shopping for one etc. There are plenty of people who either have never been married, are divorced, widowed etc. I hope that you will invite someone to coffee, invest some time in someone else and find things to spend some of your time to do things that you have either always wanted to do or that you want to rediscover.
My heart goes out to you :( I am a single mom and was devastated when both of my kids moved out of state - my son to a college many states away and my daughter one state away. I didn't think I could survive, as we were so very close and being a single mom, they were my life. One thing that helped me was to re-do all of the bedrooms - mine and theirs. Didn't have to be an expensive make-over, just something that made them all look different (I did paint and re-arranging). Now, when I walk past their rooms and into mine, I'm not overwhelmed by memories and the realization that they are gone. It feels like a possibly ok new chapter in my life instead of intense sadness. I will tell you that time really does heal wounds, as I didn't think I could survive - but I have, for 4 months now and no longer so desperately sad. Keep telling yourself that it is ok for you to be your own person again - I think we forget that in while immersed in motherhood. And know that you're not alone or crazy for being sad...you're just a normal mom. I hope your heart starts to heal soon :)
