Empty Nests Support Group
Empty nest syndrome is a general feeling of depression and loneliness that parents/other guardian relatives feel when one or more of their children leave home. Empty nest syndrome has become more prevalent in modern times, as the extended family is becoming less common than in past generations, and the elderly are left living by themselves.
You are both feeling upset because no one likes change as the fear of the unknown scares them.
So maybe let her know you will still need her just as much for advice even if you don't live with her.
Maybe consider not moving too far away so you can visit and have a meal with her once a week. It's quite nice to have someone else cook for you ;)
Let her know how your plans involve her - but at a comfortable distance of independence.
Also you might consider going with her to some clubs nearby (yoga for example) so she can make new friends (you can drop out later).
I think just reassuring her that you still need her and she's still your mum is all she needs.
I've stopped being so upset now as my son has started texting me asking me things like how to cook peas in the microwave without them blowing up ha ha.
Tell her you are as scared as she is of the unknown but together you will get through it .
Anyone else got advice?
Good luck ;)
