what happens you you get sick?
Whenever I feel my stomach being uneasy I start panicking:
-i begin twitching... like snapping my fingers or pacing... trying to make it go away
-i feel heat traveling throughout my body from the head down
-my heart races... like crazy... i have seen my pulse reach 200 before
-my body shakes all over... sometimes my body shakes so hard i look as if i am having a seizure
-i get cold sweats
-i go through cycles of cold then hot
-i can't talk
-i can't swallow anything... including saliva
-sometimes i feel as if i am going to pass out
my attacks like this generally last anywhere from 3- 10 hours. it takes my body weeks to recover and i generally loose a lot of weight really quickly... once 8 lbs in 24 hours.
Are attacks like this common among emets? Do most emets experience attacks like mine or does every emet have a different reaction?
I luckily dont have too many moments when i feel im really going to be sick, but i remember last may when i caught the dreaded stomach bug. I stood in one place, because last time i paced i was sick. I use a hot pack on my tummy, and i also have it where my throat completly closes up, it happened for 2 hours and my mouth was soo dry, My legs were shaking like crazy, i never checked my pulse, but im sure it was pretty high. I get alot of nasuea often and i do panic where i get hot and cold flashes, the shakes. It sucks we cant escape our bodies sometimes.
Hey firerabbit - I get all of the above & what I am reading below. I am also very disturbed (FOR DAYS!!) when I even hear that someone else has gotten sick or if there is a stomach bug going around
Yes, I have a full scale anxiety attack, which sounds like what you get too.
I also make people convince me that I won't get sick. I'll get on the phone if I'm alone, or make my husband or kids "talk me down."
It's funny you mentioned saliva. Not funny, ha-ha, but you know funny in that I HATE saliva! I won't chew gum, I can't even think about saliva. I get angry when I see someone spit in public. I have to quit typing on the subject now, in fact.
I had to think about this one (it has been a while). Basically when I start to feel nauseous I will try to drink something fizzy (usually diet cola cause that is what is always in the fridge and it has to be cold). If I still feel bad after being able to belch a few times I will have another swig or two and maybe a slippery elm - it sooths and lines your stomach. And in really bad episodes I will take some Bentonite. I have to be very careful with using that as it is not available here and I don't have much left and no way of getting any more.
I do go into a cold sweat but I think my fear is lesser in this area and more in fear of others throwing up.
I, too, have many nervous system responses when I either feel sick or witness someone I love feeling or being sick. I experience a low-grade panic attack (cold sweats, full body shakes, etc.). I also feel a compulsive urge to pace.
Well I have anxiety attacks all the time even when i'm not feeling sick...although i'm not really sure what feeling sick is like because I havnt really been sick. Apparently alot of emets are like that. They will never actually be sick themselves.
But anyway, last night was horrible because I had bad diarrhea and i was shaking heaps and going hot and cold and then i went back into bed and i was sitting there shaking and my partner was trying to stop me by massaging me and trying to keep me warm because he said he couldnt get to sleep with me shaking like an earthquake! I have pretty bad anxiety attacks when other people are sick too, eispecially if I dont know why and there might be a chance I get it.
Hi Nitokris
Welcome to emetophobia site!
I know exactly how u feel with the diarrhea!! It terrifies me & I thought I was the only one who got scared with it. I've spoken to other emets & they dont panic if the get diarrheah!!
We're also the same way about feeling sick, I like you never feel or are sick, actually I havent been sick for 20 years (it will be 20 years on July 10th ).
Last Thursday I got a stomach ache. I told myself I would be fine, well it carried over until the next day, then the panic set in. I was in panic for 6 days and lost more than 10 pds. I had just had a feeling that lasted maybe 1 min that I was going to be sick (I didnt even get sick) and all those feelings you just said I experienced. It is just a major panic attack, because we are terrified of being sick. I would say yes its common and you are def. not alone. I have been sick 4 times in my life and i went 11 years one time without it.
i go into full body shakes..and i twitch my hands or snap or wave my arms around a little. if im able to i try to pace...i also feel my pulse when i feel panicky. its like a weird habit..i try to get my mind off of it somehow, like talking to someone about something that im passionate about or someone i hate so that i can get my mind off of it. i have ibs (irritable bowel syndrome), so i have diarrhea all the time, but it still freaks me out, because i could be sick and never know it. i havent gotten sick with the flu since 8th grade..im a senior now
Firerabbit, I can relate to all of your symptoms. If I am really sick with a stomach bug, I will get all of those symptoms plus a feeling that it's coming up in my throat, and then I really start to freak out. At the first slighest feeling of nausea, I take Pepto-Bismol. I also get the throat closing, which is mainly why I can't puke.
When my stomach shows signs of being sick, I shake, get cold and clammy, my heart races, I don't like being alone at ALL. I have to distract myself and the best way is to talk to someone to get my mind off it, which isn't easy.......... Luckily it doesn't happen too often. At least not the flu. I don't get it often, but I get queasy for a lot of reasons and I will have that reaction every time.
The other day my son threw up and I hated being alone with him, having to deal with it myself. Luckily while I was alone with him he didn't throw up but it didn't stop the anxiety I was feeling at the thought that he COULD be sick while I was alone with him. I didn't eat all day because I was queasy. When he seems to be doing better, I do better too. Although I tend to worry that I will catch what he had. Once it looks like I bypassed it, I feel a ton better.
omg thats me all over everything you said i do, i used to jump in the car and drive, my logic was that i was driving away from it (silly i know) but it used to calm me right down until i didnt feel sick.
I also make people convince me that I won't get sick. I'll get on the phone if I'm alone, or make my husband or kids "talk me down."
