I have heard that said to me SO often..... "Get over it" "You have a child, you will have to get used to it eventually". "No one likes to throw up." ARGHHHH... I feel like yelling at every person who tells me those things. My mom said it to me the other day when my son was throwing up some. They just don't get it! I hear ya! I am so glad I am not alone in this. Until the other day I thought I was really weird cause I had never heard of this phobia and I have never met anyone who reacts the way I do.
It makes me soooo frustrated and depressed when people say things like that. Its not that simple!!!! Do you say to someone who has broken their back "get over it!" ?? NO!! We are no different its still a horrific thing for us as what they go through. Some people would think thats ridiculous but its not. We are as disabled as them.
That was my old account as I am using this one now, but I have accepted that in this life I am not at all ready to overcome my phobia... I have stopped caring what other people say. If they have a problem with my emet, then deep down what it means is that they are having a problem with something else that they are dealing with and have targeted my emet instead. They are the ones who need to get over it.
OMG IF I EVER HEAR SOMEONE SAY THAT TO ME AGAIN I WILL LOSE IT.
my doctor tryed to help me get over my fear and infront of me she licked her door knob in her office and told me to sit in the er to prove i wouldnt get sick being around sick people...a kid threw up in front me of....i freaked and told her...she smiled and said thats a good thing..now in 3 days tell me if your sick.....i wasnt but omg! ....thats my little story...but hey ill GET OVER IT...pssh jerks....next person that says that...middle finger right in the face take it
god that makes me so angry. My therapist (or trainee therapist as she was) told me to stop being stupid about being affraid of the bottom of shoes (in case they have gone near sick outside) and rubbed her hands all over it in front of me. Just like you Jebs doctors tell me to go near someone who is sick and see what happens. They say exposure but I just live with it for a while. Clean as soon as I can and then it all come back. I have even managed to spend the rest of the day in 'dirty' clothes but when i take them off to go to bed, they will not go back on in the morning, they go straight in the wash so exposure doesn't work.
Do they tell people with fear of flying etc to get over it! I think not. I really hate it when people say - oh everyone is affraid of being sick. No they are not! They do it - its horrible but they just wash up and get on with things. Not the case for us is it!
completely understand. 'grow up and get on with it' and 'get over it' does not help. when will people realise? people who tell me i don't have a clue or I am just being silly infuriate me. they can't see this is a very real fear.
My now fiance used to say this to me when we first got together, but then he educated himself and apologized. But I am open and honest about my condition to all my friends and family, they now understand it too. So I don't hear it very often, just from the occasional ignorant person. Its a huge pet peeve of mine, I have never tolerated it from anyone including my father who has only ever said it to me once, I was so mad and made sure he knew it.
