Eczema Support Group
Eczema is a form of inflammation of the upper layers of the skin. The main symptoms are skin rashes characterized by redness, skin edema, itching and dryness, with possible crusting, flaking, blistering, cracking, oozing or bleeding. I've had moderate to severe eczema all of my life- all over my body. (I've impressed quite a few doctors with my skin, which is, I know, what every girl dreams of)
These past few years, though, my skin has gone berserk! Breakouts that raged out of control, skin going from fine to completely covered in rash overnight, and so on. I have had so many rounds of steroids I have lost count. Despite my best efforts, despite working so hard when it comes to controlling contact with allergens and so forth, despite regiments and bleach baths and trying everything, my skin remains volatile and unpredictable.
I went to see my dermatologist today after a month of an eczema flare that persisted throughout over a month and 2 rounds of oral steroids (it would get a bit better, but not heal entirely, so when the steroids stopped it would just blossom up again).
My dermatologist has a new 'theory'.
I'm diagnosed bipolar, and have been on Lamictal since at least 2007. My doctor is now adamantly for the idea that the sudden decline in my skin health is because of Lamictal.
I am very confused and don't know what to think. Can this be possible? I've been on Lamictal consistently for years; why on earth would it start to effect me now? Has anyone else encountered a doctor saying this? Does it sound plausible?
I can't just 'trial run' going off of my mood stabilizer; that would severely impact my life and my ability to function.
Before I even consider this, I want to know what people think- has anyone heard of this? Is it possible that after 5 years, it suddenly started giving me trouble??

I did go to a doctor thinking it might be the Lamictal Rash, but it has been confirmed that it's just eczema.
Though it's not the potentially fatal rash, I think that Lamictal might make one more prone to skin conditions, and since I already had the history of eczema, it made it flare up again.

Clearly more research is needed. I have chronic Eczema on my legs and hoping it doesn't worsen it ...hopefully clears it up! :-)
