As for treating the underlying causes... I used to cut, but I knew why I cut (to handle emotions, anger, rage, fear...). Because I knew why I cut, I was able to stop cold turkey and find other ways of dealing with the emotions. I have not cut for almost 4 years now.
So I think it would be easier to change your ed behavior if you knew what was causing it and addressed that. I don't know why my ed started or what is driving it, and it's sooo hard for me to change my ed behavior. All I know for sure is that my ed started while I was seeing a psychologist who eventually lost his license due to his behavior with some of his female clients. I can't even remember what was going on at that time or when/why I started binging and purging. I think if I could figure that out and address it, I'd have a better chance of beating my ed.
I don't know if it would show up on a background check if you want to a therapist. I have been through several background checks for my federal government jobs and if they have seen my history of counseling and my official bipolar diagnosis, no one has ever said anything and it has not affected my getting and keeping the jobs.
