I have gone through therapy and I have been on the recovery road for quite awhile, however, I will be honest and say that the temptation to fall back in to my old ways and habits is still there. I have come to the conclusion that I don't think the temptation will ever go away. However, I have learned that I have the power to control how I react to the negative feelings and the temptation of binging/purging. I don't have to give in to it. I have gained other essential tools to help me cope in healthier ways. Do I always make the right choice and not give in? No, I'd be lying if I said I never give in and all is great. However, it is very rare that it does happen!
As for tips, I would highly recommend seeing a therapist. They will help you uncover your triggers and help you learn to confront those negative emotions and teach you new ways to cope with your feelings. I would also recommend getting a support system in place. At the very least, someone you trust and can call whenever and they will help keep you accountable. When I am having negative thoughts that are starting to make me spiral downward, I try to replace them with positive thoughts or I have written reminders around the house to help me refocus on the positive. Much of the time, it is a mental battle. I have learned I don't have to give in and I have the power to overcome. My ED does not have to control me as it once did. Knowing that I have control has empowered me to make the right decisions and cope with my emotions. I've also learned that even in those times that I do fail, I need to extend myself grace. I'm not perfect. I never will be. The best I can do is pick myself back up and keep moving forward the best that I can. Hope this answers your questions and gives you some insight and hope! Wishing you the best!
