I once shared a flat with a diabetic for a couple of years. She ate basic healthy food regularly and it was hard to see she had any kind of illness. She was normal weight and a regular runner. The diabetic diet can be very healthy but as far as I understand regularity in eating is highly important.
Its good that you already mentioned the potential problems with your classes. Remember, not everything that applies to diabetics in general applies to you personally.
You'll need to lay out your meal plans, exercise plans and life choices if you want to handle your diabetes well.
