I was on Tumblr (a blogging website) earlier and some stupid pro-ana post popped up on my dash. "I really hate fat anorexics. Everyone knows you have to have a BMI of 17.5 or less to really have anorexia." I almost flipped a sh*t on this little ignorant twit. That is nowhere in the criteria, you have to have lost a certain amount of weight relative to your previous body weight. If a 500 pound person starves themselves and loses 100 pounds in six weeks, guess what? They qualify.

But what also angered me was this little brat's stuck-up attitude, like an eating disorder is some special club. Give me a break. She has so much to learn, I cannot wait until she realizes how ridiculous her thought process is.

Uggh! I cant stand ppl like that. She needs to get her facts straight....seriously. Its an illness NOT a judgemental clique!!!

I agree with you being upset... I would be upset too. I do one comment about the 500 pound person who loses 100 pounds in 6 weeks.... some of The Biggest Losers have done that... or even less weight have lose 100 pounds in 6 weeks, but they don't starve themselves, but they do work out hard in the gym but anyway... I see what your point is, that if someone no matter what weight.... starves them selves they can be classified as having an eating disorder...

I HATE it when people are like that. My family thinks that you have to be really thin to have an eating disorder. It pisses me off. Some people are just so closed minded People really need to look on the facts rather than what they see on TV.

You need to be considerate of others on the board.I had an anorexia mindset at various weights.I am struggling to gain weight to a healthy BMI.I used to have people say You are too big to have anorexia. My weights have been 68-185 pounds and the mindset was always the same except during spit/chew phases and binging.We could educate people like you are talking about.

Zopta- If you had read the first part, I'm not talking about somebody looking for recovery and support on DS. I'm not talking about a pro-ana person on tumblr, a blogging website. I tried to nicely explain the facts to her, and received said reply: "You are skinny so why are you sticking up for fat ppl. It's so dumb they are not anorexic. And nothin will stop me from bein thin xoxoxo"

Not much educating to be done when people are in that mindset.

I hope you told this "twit" what you told us.. That sounds like some education she could use. I understand your little vent here, I'd loose my head if someone said that.

It's that kind of thinking that makes me scared to go into treatment for my eating disorder. I fear that I will go in and people will think "well, she's not thin how could she have an eating disorder?" and be judged.

Ok first let me say that i also hate it when people think that people with EDs have to look a certain way......and obviously her comment is coming from the mindset of someone who is very trapped in her ED (people like that are hurting and wrongfully take it out on others)..............................that said, technically she is right re the official diagnosis of anorexia; however, in the next DSM (diagnostic and statistical manuel of mental disorders) they are planning to change that so that there is no weight requirement to be diagnosed with it

also even now, using the current diagnostic criteria, someone who has all the symptoms of anorexia except the required weight will still get diagnosed with an ED - it will just be considered ED NOS (not otherwise specified)

anyway, the actual diagnosis really should not matter much - if someone is dealing with and ED then they are dealing with an awful illness and do not deserve to be invalidated on top of that

not to mention that striving for an anorexic weight is never a good thing
