Dystonia Support Group
Dystonia (literally, "abnormal muscle tone") is a generic term used to describe a neurological movement disorder involving involuntary, sustained muscle contractions. Dystonia may affect muscles throughout the body, in certain parts of the body, or may be confined to particular muscles or muscle groups.
My husband is the dystonic person. His experience so far has been awesome with the oral dosage.
However, His Dr.'s wanted to try for a Baclofen pump for him so he went for a test in March. 07
The Dr. injects a form of baclofen directly into the space surrounding the spinal cord. This is called intrathecal Baclofen.
Anyway, Howard reacted badly. the baclofen immediately caused his entire body to spasm, and cramp all at once! Every muscle! This was very scary!!
Thank God we were in the hospital doing this as an outpatient, rather then in a Dr.'s office! This reaction lasted for 4 hours, a very LONG 4 hours! Fortunately the only residual effect was that he had to go off the baclofen because now it doesn't help at all.
We still haven't found out why this has happened. I think all of the Dr.'s are stumped also. Not that this is unusual when dealing with anything about dystonia.
God Bless!
