Dyspraxia is difficulty getting the body to do what we want when we want to do it. Apraxia is a neurological disorder characterized by being unable to execute or carry out learned (familiar) movements, even if the desire and physical ability is there. This group is dedicated to those coping with either aprxia or dyspraxia. Join the group to find support and get advice.
A GREAT website is apraxia-kids.org. PLEASE go there; it helped me to decide to start my son\'s therapy.
If they are right, you will lose precious time and the early years are key. It is so much easier to retrain speech etc at an early age than after your child reaches school or after they have become so discouraged that they give up and have low self-esteem. If you look at the dyspraxia sites mentioned in the other posts and the message boards such as this, you will see the benefits of early intervention and how much time has been wasted when people were unable to get a diagnosis and had to fight for it. You have the diagnosis, so I think you should use it to your advantage. I put my son on omega 3-6-9 capsules as soon as I found out he had dyspraxia. I doubted that they would work. However, the only side effects were supposed to be brittle nails and shiny hair. So I tried it and it was one of the best choices I ever made! He started using more words, his coordination improved and his hand tremors decreased significantly within 3 weeks. I don't mean to preach, it's just that I can't see a downside to getting the treatment and the potential benefits are huge and so important to your child. Every day, I thank God that my son has had almost two years of help and has improved vastly as a result. He still has a long ways to go, but at least he isn't 6 and just starting treatment. Good luck with your son!
