Hi my names GodivaGurl,
I decided to join this group because I think I might have dyscalculia.I have never heard of this ld till my professor asked me one day at the end of class if I had a math disability.I didn't know what to say because I wasent sure if she was joking or making fun of me because she started laughing hysterically.I didnt say anythin I just walked out of class. To my suprise I nor my parents never heard of it at all.I know I have had difficulty all my life with mathematics and was in a special education class since second grade and through half of my highschool year.I have always had problems mesmorizing the multipication tables, doing two, three,or more higher number long division like 39,962 divided by 422.Telling time for example I know when its 1:00pm the small hand on the one and the longer hand on the twelve but if some one told me its "quarter past" or "half past" Im totally lost especially when Im given word problems with time, estimating or rounding!Thats the worst!Word problems in general are hard.I try to look for clue words like I was told by my professor,my mom,and tutor but my brain just does not connect. The metric system and measurments are even hard.In addition to this when I do homework, quizes, and tests I sometimes practice the wrong problems down, like say I have problem 12 and I do 21 or I copy the equation wrong reversing the numbers or turning a 6 into a 9.I know how to make a 6 and 9 and know these are numbers but for some reason I copy them wrong. So far I have taken basic math twice the first time I dropped out bec I was failing with an F and my professor was inflexable with my disability plan. The second semester I took it again and tuffed it out.For mid term I was given a D.To my professor she said; "Your lucky,I was being nice!" What ever that ment?I admit I did do very poor on quizes and tests and some of my hw but I did re-do them and oviously I get no credit!
She also was inflexable at first and aswell didnt follow my plan.Till my father had a talk with her.She then let me use a calculatior and was given extra time. But,was still very sarcastic towards me and my advisor stood up for her instead of actually listening to me!
She says this is her personality and she really is a nice professor.I have actually sat down in her class and take notes for one of her other students and she seems like she really knows her math. Why dont you talk to her?I did and did no help, she dont remember how she behaves in class nor what comes out of her own mouth!I took 3.5 hrs on my final exam would of finished the rest but was kicked out bec the testing center was shutting down for the last day before the holidays and she still gave me a D- for a final when you need a C to pass. She knew this and did not oviously care!
Does anyone else experience these problems with math and ever had a professor or teacher who was very cruel?
How do you deal with them?
If I do have dyscalculia why didnt my special education teachers never mentioned it?
Is this ld common or is it ofthen missdiagnosed?,
Do a lot of you have trouble with tests and quizes when it comes to math?(I know dumb question but I ask bec I passed all of my math classes in grade school with C's and B's with a few A's but for college work Im failling!F's and D's even when using a calculator!)
Also how do you get diagnosed and is there any treatment for this LD?

I am looking for support for my daughter. She feels very alone as there is not much understanding or recognition at her school. One problem is that she so mistrusts teachers due to all the strain and stress she felt with their reactions/lack of understanding in the past. She wants to be famous to prove to everyone that she is not dumb. She admires keira nightly and orlando bloom as they are dyslexics but she needs to connect with her 'kind' so she does not feel so alone, and so much despair , in regards to her future...
Anything anyone could say would help. She is in counselling, but is refusing to go to school, and I have been told that mainstream is best for her but she always feels so stupid. She does great socially, great friendships. ???
For those doing research, she had early language aquisition. At 18 months old, she was saying clear, 6 word sentences. At 15 months she had an infection in her mouth and the only way I knew is because she could tell me, with a three word sentence!!
:) Best to all
