Dry Eyes Support Group
Dry eyes is an eye disease caused by decreased tear production or increased tear film evaporation. Symptoms include burning and a sandy-gritty eye irritation that gets worse as the day goes on. The symptoms are often caused by a loss of water from the tears that results in tears that are too "salty" or hypertonic.
Does Whole Foods carry this & which brand do you use? I googled it & got a bunch of brands. My problem started in my left eye mostly, but I have blocked oil glands in both. It's worse in my left eye. It was horrible this pass winter & caused me many problems, including anxiety & depression. I hoep this can help. I've been on Restasis since the first of this year & it does seem to help some, but if I work in the yard it can inflame easily. Thanks for the info. I will try anything that helps my quality of life.
Best wishes!
Were you able to get a good quality omega3? Some good sources are cod liver oil, krill oil, and mussell oil which you can find at a health shop or possibly stores like whole foods or market street in your area. They can come in pill or liquid form though i would think the liquid form where you drink a spoon 1-2x/day is best for absorption.
Other good supplements I recommend for overall eye care are magnesium (ionic or citrate form, 500-700mg/day), vitamin C (500-100mg/day), astaxanthin (powerful betacarotene from fish), lutein, zeaxanthin, and bilberry. Please email me @zakbar321@hotmail.com if you have any questions or need any help. Good luck!
I think you need a stronger source of omega3. Flax is a weak source because it converts to ALA first & then a small fraction (5-10%) of that is converted to omega 3s. Fish oils are converted directly to omega3 so I recommend you take that. Check whole foods store, or a health store in your area would even be better since they would have a bigger selection & sometimes even better quality. Just google the terms "natural health store" and your area name and check. You can buy cod liver oil, or krill oil which is high in EPA, DHA the good stuff that helps provide the many benefits of omega3. Barleans brand comes in liquid form so it absorbed well & has a natural sweetener added that gives it a good taste without the fishy aftertaste.Good luck.
You're right, there's no miracle supplement that will provide immediate relief because I'm discovering from feedback I'm getting that how long it takes to find relief & the amount of relief for dry eyes or any health condition depends on other factors as well so it varies for each person- the severity of the dry eye condition, the overall health of the person, nutrition (diet), lifestyle habits (sleep, physical activity, rest, stress levels), and environmental pollution exposure (for dry eyes, polluted air and bright lights). I was fortunately very healthy and health conscious at the time (my diet, lifestyle) yet I still had the dry eyes but the first few days I began taking this high quality omega3 supplement (3 times/day), I began experiencing relief so I'm certain that's a big part of the solution. But the other factors I mentioned are important as well and information as to what changes need to be made (especially nutritional) is key so I'm compiling the information I have & doing more research which I promise to share here as soon as its complete. I'm confident that any dry eye condition no matter how severe can find relief if some nutritional and lifestyle changes are made (and a high quality omega3 supplement is a must in the case of dry eyes). Its challenging but extremely rewarding. and it gets easier as we make these changes and start feeling healthier AND happier. Good luck to all!
Yes the actual liquid is better for you, but I couldn't stand to drink it, I found mixing it in chocolate milkshakes was the best, but now I have a hard time drinkings those with or without the oil!
I also use just a simple lubricant ointment in my eyes at night which really helps me get through the night without waking up in the morning feeling like my eyes are dried up and nasty feeling. I've used the ointment for a long time (I get it Walmart or Walgreens) It's AM/PM eye ointment, it is pretty common and easy to find. I did notice it getting on my pillow so I bought some eye masks and I wear those while I sleep to keep the ointment in. It is kinda hard to put into my eyes by myself, but I squeeze it between my thumb and middle finger, while resting my pointer finger on my brow so that it stays steady. Then I lean back and pinch my lower lid to smoosh the ointment in a bit.
