Dry eyes is an eye disease caused by decreased tear production or increased tear film evaporation. Symptoms include burning and a sandy-gritty eye irritation that gets worse as the day goes on. The symptoms are often caused by a loss of water from the tears that results in tears that are too "salty" or hypertonic.
Is anyone suffering with migranes and severe eye pain due to chronic dry eye? I know it's associated with my dry eye disease because if I put in ointment it helps it to go away unlike taking meds for it. Also, if I put in a bandage contact I can obtain some relief as well. The problem is that it is getting more severe to the point where it is happening daily. I have tried many things for my chronic dry eye: all types of tears and ointments, plugs, restasis, azasite, blood serum, etc. without significant relief.

I had severe eye pain but not migraines and it happened on a daily basis. My eyes would be okay in the morning but would start to get dry around noon and by night, I would be laying down with a heating pad on my eyes along with Refresh PM eye ointment. The heat seemed to help. Out of desperation when nothing else would work, I had the lower tear duct on my right eye cauterized shut to keep the few tears that I produced from leaking out. I still have dry eyes but I do not have the aching pain anymore. I also think that taking fish oil capsules 3 times a day has made a big difference. It takes about 6 to 8 weeks to feel the difference. I know the pain you are talking about and I am sorry to hear that you are going thru that. If a person hasn't gone thru that pain, it is hard to explain to anyone how awful it can be. Do you have dry mouth or any other symptoms? It can be related to Sjogrens.

Just remembered --prednisone eye drops will help with the inflammation of the eye which is caused by the dryness. Anytime an eye is inflamed it will be painful. The doctor had me start out with drops 3 times a day, then 2, then 1, and then I had to stop. I had some left over so when my eye hurt so bad that I couldn't stand it, I would use the leftover prednisone drops and it would help. Maybe this would help you get the inflammation down and give your eyes a chance to heal.

Fish oil has helped my dry eyes. I havent had the eye pain but sometimes I feel like all I want to do is close my eyes/

I've had migraines for 13 years. After some time, I learned and understood my triggers. Then I started getting them every single day and felt eye pain. I assumed it was sinus related. Lucky for me, my opthamologist found that I have very dry eyes from not producing tears (possibly sjogren's). He put plugs in my eyes and the eye pain and migraines were gone the next day! It's been 2months and I've had ONE migraine! I really hope you find relief.

So thankful for all the suggestions. I have or am using all of these so I must just have an extreme case. Good to know, although, that these various things do help some. God bless you all!

you might try another fish oil, some are better then others for dry eyes. when my daughter had lasik surgery her docter told her to use omega max by ameriscience. they said they have lots of good results from it. it useually takes 1 month to see good results. I just started taking them so I cant say if they make a big differance or not yet.
