It does sound like an infection and unfortunatly that will need antibiotics from the vet. The only thing I can think off is we use to have a dog that use to get water in his ear that caused infections. We use to drop some metolated spirits in his ear to help dry it up so it didnt get infected. Not sure if that will help tho if its already infected

Sorry to hear about your dogs ears and the infection. What we have done when our dogs ears, we warm up some olive oil and then put a little bit in their ears and rub the ear. We have found that it really helps to rub the ear as they like it.

If it is a fungal infection then my vet recommended Lotrimin AF (it's for jock itch) it's an over the counter cream found in any pharmacy in the states, I don't know about elsewhere. She said to just put some on a Q-tip to get it in the ear (vertical canal) don't put the Q-tip too far into the dogs ear, and then massage the ear to spread the cream around once day for 7 days. I would find a vet fast because if it's a bacterial infection it can get bad fast and actually cause the ear canal to rupture, besides any ear infection is very painfull for the dog and ear scratching can cause the dog to give themselves a hematoma on the ear, if they break a blood vessels while scratching. A hemotoma will cause the dogs ear to bleed internally and / or could break the ear cartalidge. Then that would need to be treated by having the blood drained out and buttons sewn onto the ear to support it. Otherwise left untreated it could leave the dog with a deformed ear for life. Ear infections are serious and should be looked at by the vet ASAP.

it seems to have calmed down.. its not as itchy as it was, so i think the vinegar cleanings worked, thats what the vet told me to do and to bring her in if it got worse. she is not constantly shaking her head and whining when she scratches herself like she was. so i dont know. i hope it was just an infection that is going away now that her immune system fought off.

The right ear cleanser will really help alot. I've never tried the vinegar but I'm glad it's working for you. My dog used to constantly get ear infections and she hated for me to wash her ears, she nearly tried to jump out of a closed window one day to get away from the bottle when she saw me coming with it. Then I switched to a brand called Vet Solutions Ear Wash and it doesn't bother her like the other kind did. The other kind didn't help at all and it irritated her alot, so much so that she scratched her face up with her dew claw so bad it bled after getting her ears washed with it. I can't remember what it was called but ever since I switched to Vet Solutions her ears have not gotten infected again since. I'm glad to hear your dog is doing better now.

the vinegar bothered her, but if a vet told me to do it, i did it. i hated it. her ears hurt, and then she would run around like crazy. i had to tie a towel around her head to keep her from scratching herself too much. but she does seem better. ive seen the vet solutions ear wash. i couldnt find it when i went looking though. i need to find a place that has it cause i need to keep up on her ears now real well.

It leaves the ears smelling like candy and flowers and leaves the ears feeling dry so they don't have that 'water in the ear' feeling that bothers them afterwards. I have to get cotton balls to stick down in the ears to get the wax out with though. She will shake her head and get some wax out but not all of it. I also use Momentamax ear drops (from the vet) on her ears the day before I clean them to soften the wax. The Momentamax also kills any bacteria or fungus. Otomax works good too for that too. If you can get either Momenamax or Otomax and use the the day before and then wash them with Vet Solutions the next day and it will get their ears really really clean and smelling so nice. I only have to clean her ears about once a month doing it that way now. I guess you should check with your vet first but this works really good for my dog.
