Dry Skin - Advice please

Recently our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Alexi who is 14 months old has been itching, and itching and itching.....we initially thought - oh no - fleas - she was due her next flea treatment, and we did see one or two, so treated her.....now they have all gone, no signs of any for at least the last 2 weeks or more.....however she is still itching.....on inspecting her skin, we are finding odd scaly dry skin patches, just small areas. She has also gone for two areas on either side of her tail which are now bald, again we are seeing the dry scaly patches around here as well.

Any ideas what it is? and the best treatment. When we do give her a bath, we use a tea-tree and aloe vera dog shampoo.

Rub hydrocortisone on those areas that are bald and itchy, it should stop the itching, you can buy it at the pharmacy. Also, you might try giving her fish oil supplements. Good luck.

That sounds like a skin infection to me. The first signs of which are you finding very small pieces of fur held together by a little piece of skin. Then you see crusty spots and bald spots. This can be caused by a couple of things, but in your case is probably flea dermatitis (allergy to flea bites). You best get your darling dog to the vet for some anti-biotics. My dog has this problem cronicly because she is allergic to her RX food and fleas, although I can make sure that she never gets another flea with Advantage fleas drops once a month, they still can't find her a better food to eat that won't upset her stomach. The vet has prescribed medicated shampoo, and Cephelexin (pills) or Muricin ointment. My dogs skin infection mutated (I guess is the right word) and the Cephelexin didn't work anymore so they switched her to the Muricin anti-biotic ointment. Also you will need to wash the crusty bald spots everyday with medicated RX shampoo (from the vet) and give either the oral or rub on the topical anti-biotic until the crustyness is gone and the fur starts to grow back. And when it is cleared up inspect your dogs skin regularily for any new spots that might appear.

If your dog has a dry skin problem, oatmeal shampoo for dogs will help but from what you have said it really sounds like a skin infection to me and left untreated could be very dangerous, even fatal, don't take a chance on your dog getting an even worse infection from this like a staff infection from wounded skin and end up getting septic blood and dying. Please see your vet immediately!!!

I thought about that last line, I should say ASAP. As long as your dog is still eating and not acting sick. I'd make a vet apt. right away tomorrow if it was me.

my dog has had the same problem, i had to take him to the vet ,i was told it was fungus and he needed to be on tablets,the vet also said to give him fish oil cap like the one people take from the health food stores,that also work, goodluck

    My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
