Dizziness & Vertigo Support Group
Dizziness is the sensation of instability. Vertigo refers to dizziness with a sensation of motion. Vertigo is more likely than other types of dizziness to be associated with nausea, vomiting, or double vision, to occur even when lying down, and to feel better with the eyes closed. I used to get terrible Vertigo. I'd wake up so dizzy, w/ the room spinning, and I'd instantly throw up if I moved my head AT ALL.
Eventually I figured out that it was associated with using Nasonex nasal spray for allergies. When I told my father-in-1aw, who is an ear nose & throat doc, and also when I told my own doc, that I'd made that connection, they both said "no... it can't be that" BUT vertigo IS listed as a side effect (at least it was when I looked it up). So i don't know why they were so resistant to the idea. But it was every time I'd start using Nasonex after not using it for a while, that the vertigo would show up.
One time it was so bad, we had company coming from out of the country, and hubby was at work and I was laying on the bed trying not to move. If I moved my head at all I'd throw up. So I couldn't get the doorbel when it rang! I couldn't get to my phone when the visitors rang the doorbell from their cell phone on my doorstep! I felt so bad, but every movement caused me to throw up all over myself and the bed. I had to lie still.
My doc told me that his colleague, another doc that works in the same office, would get vertigo so bad that he'd have to be admitted to the hospital and be put on fluids.
So I haven't had vertigo myself in a while, but my mom had it a couple weeks ago. I took her to the ER cuz we thought it was a stroke or heart attack (based on her med. history) but it was vertigo. So she went to her general doc the following Monday and he told her how some people in the medical community wonder if vertigo is somehow viral. He'll have no patients w/ vertigo for weeks and then all of a suddent get several in one day. Then my mom went to visit her former place of employment (cuz she has lots of friends there) and 5 people in the place were out sick w/ vertigo, some were even in the hospital with it.
In our town we have a "balance clinic" that my physical therapist gave me a business card for, it's associated w/ the hospital. They do head-movement treatment for vertigo and have had lots of success with curing patients.
So, that's my experience w/ vertigo and I'm very curious about it. I'm going to read some of the posts here to see what this community is like. :)

I am curious about the idea of vertigo being viral....maybe it's viral infection in us???? I see a homeopathic doc and she uses a QXCI machine on me to scan my body and my body has numerously come up w/my body fighting a viral infection. Anyhow, do you have more info on this? Nasonex....i have used that in the past, but have opted to use a natural oriented one and it gives me great relief. I don't think my nasal passages/earways drain right. I'm pleased that you have received relief! YAY!

Hi1 I'm new also. The reasson for my dizziness and vertigo is lesions on my Brain Stem. You see I have MS and that is one of the symptoms. I can't be cured but maybe there is something that can help. If anyone has suggestions I'ld like to hear them.

Yes, actually vertigo can be a virus. I went to Emery Hospital in Atlanta and the neurolgist said that there is a vertigo virus that can last up to 9 mths. He said it ususally does not reoccur once it is gone. Mine, of course, was not a virus since I have had it for several years. A few people in the office I work at actually had it.

an ear nose and throat doctor told me vertigo was caused by a virus, and they didn't have medicine to treat it .

I had vertigo symptons and a ear specialist who ran me through several test concluded I had too much fluid in my inner ear. The excess fluid backs up and could move those little crystals which are very sensitive. When that happens you get that spinning and dizzy effect. Of course, this does not hold true for everyone. I'm taking several supplements and was told to eliminate coffee (yeah right) and salt from my diet. It's good to talk to specialist who know about vertigo and it's symptoms. It's a frustrating sympton with little effective treatment. I'm not dizzy or spinning but I do feel a little light headed most of time. Its like I'm in a dreamy state, not 100% on my game. Does that make sense?

yes , davidindallas that makes perfect sense to me i am always light headed and sometimes my head feels like it is stuffed full of something.

I would also agree that these symptons could be the result of a virus. It's so weird that it is hard to say exactly what causes this. Frustrating.
