Dizziness & Vertigo Support Group
Dizziness is the sensation of instability. Vertigo refers to dizziness with a sensation of motion. Vertigo is more likely than other types of dizziness to be associated with nausea, vomiting, or double vision, to occur even when lying down, and to feel better with the eyes closed. If you are a frequent sufferer of dizziness or vertigo, join the group and find support.
Thanks for sharing. So sorry you're not feeling well. We understand.
I get vertigo related to Temporal Mandibular Joint Disorder (aka grinding my teeth too much). I imagine my nutty sensations are similar to yours -- dizzy, lightheaded, eye problems, weird head feelings, and anxiety from the randomness. It's hard to control but I'm getting better, little by little, now that I know. Like you, the doctors told me they couldn't find anything after all the tests.... Oh, maybe because they never asked the right question. They're helpful if you can tell them what's wrong, otherwise it can be a painful guessing game.
Mine was related to allergies, too, but not the way one might think. I sleep like a hibernating bear in the spring and fall because of pollen -- like 10, 12 or more hours some days. Which, of course, gives me lots of hours to grind my teeth while I sleep. It literally made me crazy not knowing for two years, to the point of thinking the worst about the future.
There's hope, though. We've had a couple of success stories on this board lately -- folks who were so worried, but eventually found out that they had BPPV (crystals loose in the ear canal). Did your doctors try to test for, or fix, that through head manipulation (Eply maneuver)? There might be something simple like that, or it might take a long while before you find the source and solution. Please let us know more. We enjoy reading others' experiences.
I have also thought about TMJ because I do catch myself feeling my jaw clenched, my jaw does pop, it sometimes locks and I have to stop and think about it to get it to unlock, my jaw makes unpleasant noises when I chew at times....but I don't feel any pain in the jaw...I've read that TMJ causes unbearable pain (hurts to eat or open your mouth).....I don't seem to have that problem...so I don't know if that can still be a possibility...However, I do feel pain in my neck right at the base/right side of my skull. I have asked my dentist about The possibility of having TMJ, but he just pretty much ignored it...think I have to shop around for a new dentist...
Glad to hear that you are are feeling better....keep us posted!
Before I realized what was wrong, my personal signs and symptoms were the jaw popping, locking on rare occasion, ringing in the ears, and receding gums.
The gums thing was my big surprise, because I'd seen other dentists for years and they gave me different possible reasons, but it wasn't until I switched to my latest DDS, that I was told: "When you grind your teeth, it causes micro movements back and forth, and over time your gums can recede."
So, that's when I was given a bite guard, which I am STILL having a hard time convincing myself to wear whenever possible. So, I can't tell if that will stop the vertigo or not.
I don't have the hearing problem, but I do have labrynthitis.
Whenever virus is going around or I have too much salt or dairy, I will spin.
I cannot lay on my rt side during the night or I start to spin.
So my remedy is I take benadryl, sudafed and meclizzine.
It usually works and occasionally like this week I need to take more during the day as I am very motion sensitive right now.
I had heard about the eply manuever so while visiting my aunt, I went to her occupational therapist who tried it on me, NOTHING, I couldn't believe it. I was thinking maybe the flight changed the fluid around? I still haven't figured it out, but wish there was something we could do to get rid of it.. A person should be able to move there head around without feeling off balance. Just yesterday I parked my car and was sitting there, looked in the downward postion and whoa it was like the car moved. Ick!
I just wanted to share that you guys aren't alone but other than the drugs I take I have no ideas on how to get rid of it. :-(
Good luck
