Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
It seems they will talk to you once, to get the "juice", and then you never hear from them again. This is also true of my STBXH's family. What the heck? I am alone, struggling, have to deal with my pain, as well as the pain of my 3 children. I'm getting nothing!!! I don't get it. I was there when their house got hit by a hurricane
I was there when their husbands died, or left. I was there when their child was sick. I was there. where are they now?
I thought I had two friends from Divorce Care. I would listen to both of them sometimes sitting on the side of the road at night so I wouldn't hit that dead spot on the way home. For the first time I had friends to eat out with. One remarried and they both kind of dropped me. Its been two years last Christmas since I was invited to their house by the new husband. The only time I needed their help they were gone.
I find myself always being the friend for a season and a reason. Its very hard to make friends in this town. The people I meet are always trying to make a name for themselves. I'm not like that at all. Sorry I know this wasn't very helpful but that's what I keep finding where I live. This town is not like anywhere else I've lived.
Most friends are in it for the fun. Selling their house is fun and you want be part of the fun, super . When they need the helping hand of solace they reach for yours. Most friends are in the friendship when it is easy. Most friends --- people are just self centered. They don't mean to let you hang, they just won't leant see past their own needs. Try living in a small town , wife well known, works a big profile job, and she is the adulterous cheater, but we keep that part of her choice to divorce under wraps for our kids sake. So my good townie friends seem to presume that she is divorcing because of something I did ....like I effd around, so the femLe friends in our circle ----- even the phony image good Christian ladies pretend to not see me. And their fine men of character husbands can't afford to be seen with the likes of me.
I have 2 townie friends that are true friends. 1 knows of my wife's affair, I told him is it relevant to his ability to offer me sounding board insight. The other friend kept reaching out when I was in the early stages of dday1 --wife 90% wants to divorce dday2 wife is in at least 6 month affair, at that point wife and I keeping it all secret and I spiral down to the stark world of can't sleep can't eat can only breath but the air is full of pain molecules, the can't feel the sun on my skin even when it is blazing stark world.
I'd go to church and other place in town , I'd see our circle of friends at kid sorts events and I know I looked like shit. 2 of my "friends" were - are friends.
Out of friends not close by, they remain, they are few as we've had are share of shit hitting the fan events.
So I'm thankful for the handful of friends that are "good men/women in a storm"
Don't get worked up by the a-hole buddies, they are okay to have fun with especially when it is their fun, just don't count them as friends.
This is kind of a juvenile example because I do not value facebook much but after my divorce I went through my facebook friends and deleted 150 people. Most of the people were from my work where both my ex and I work. I did not want to waste any of my time looking at what was going on in their lives or want them them to see what is going on in mine. I am still friendly to them at work but I think social media can give too many people an inside of our lives that really should just be for close friends.
I think this is one of the hardest things about divorce and I think it's pretty well par for the course. Everyone seems to have to go through this. I suspect that people we thought were friends were never really proper 'be there for you' friends. They were always 'fair weather' friends, acquaintances who liked to have dinner parties, or who went to the theatre with us.
One couple in particular has disappointed both of us. We used to visit, go to each other's houses regularly for dinner, played games together, went to shows, out to tea, and made several long trips together. One thing we used to notice and comment on was that this couple refused to do anything separately. They either did it together, with other couples, or they didn't go out. We even made a special trip to visit them together and tell them we were separating. They dropped us both pretty well straight away. ??
I have a couple of friends who are widows. We've talked about the phenomenon you mentioned of being shunned by married women and couples. We've come to the conclusion that they are afraid we're on the hunt, and if it's not that, they don't trust their own husbands.
There's no telling who is a real friend until the chips are down far enough to sort them out. Unfortunately, some people just aren't there for the long haul.
Happily, I was pleasantly surprised to find that a number of new people keen to support me appeared out of the woodwork, and old friends I wasn't seeing much of have re-entered my life on a more frequent basis.
Divorce is a time when people show their true colours and it can be very disappointing. Others can surprise us with their understanding and compassion. One thing's for sure, divorce brings a long list of lessons we have to learn with it. If we don't choose to learn the lessons, we'll be stuck. And it's important to allow ourselves time to work through each lesson to a new way of being. First we grieve...
I think you're doing wonderfully well, Kim. As each step begins for you, you recognise it and do the work and you find your way through.
love and hugs

Post-divorce means a new start. In almost EVERY way. Most of the people in my life now - other than family - have entered my life post-divorce. Cause guess what? YOU are not the same. You may think you are, the core of you,,your beliefs and values, and yes they have remained...but you are changed. People - even beloved friends - are generally scared of change. Heck, WE were scared of change before the change tsunami hit us, right?!
Re your church, good call on changing parishes. Church is one place where you need to feel at home, peaceful, and welcome. And it something you can easily change according to your needs. Jobs...kids....money pressures....these things remain and we have to deal with them. But the activities in your life, your friends......YOU get to make these fit who you are now.
I spent some time feeling sorry for myself and wondering "why oh why" did this friend or that friend not call, not drop by for coffee.........it's wasted time. For as long as we're on this earth, we will NEVER completely figure other people out...heck, we need to spend that time/energy on figuring ourselves out!!!!
You've got a good attitude - stay the course! Best
I've read many posts/articles recently on the need for spring cleaning regarding friendships after divorce. It has been very painful for me to feel the compounded rejection from "friends" but it has also given me an opportunity to reassess.
I have always been friends with pretty much anyone who wanted to be my friend. I had very little criteria and never considered myself "worthy" enough to be discerning when it came to friends. Kinda like be nice to everyone, give everything you can and hope for the best.
Yet it is so true what you say in that we do need to be discerning with where we spend our resources. Just as money is not unlimited, so is our time and emotional energy. We must spend it, budget it and consider our emotional purchases. Some purchases are simply too expensive for what they are.
I was abandoned by my church and even people I felt close to spiritually that I was in bible studies with. These groups were certainly the LAST I ever imagined I'd not be able to turn to with my situation. I was so discouraged and hurt that I wondered if I would ever want to be involved in the organized church again.
However....the valuable lesson I have learned is that we also need to be discerning in who we listen to. The people that hurt us (and show no remorse) are not ones we need to get our truth from. They do not get to speak for the population at large. I recently invested in two different groups of churches and found acceptance and love at both. I have seen new people I've met be a true friend to me. So...these people are out there. I choose not to believe the church can't be trusted or that people can never be genuine or reciprocal. We just have to look for the treasures that God puts into our path and invest in those who desire to grow along with us.
Even among my local church members, I have on occasion challenged them to be open. Unless it tangibility takes away food from on table, seemingly disapprovals from non-ordained ordinary members has very little grain [value] of salt. Try not to take it personally because in truth, it's about that person. There are other genuinely loving people among your church who are willing to go the extra mile for your devotion and who will reciprocate the task equally.
I am truly grateful for all your input. It helps me immensely.
Kind regards,
Kim
I don’t know why...... But What I did learn from all of this is that ..I don’t want to be like that......... I don’t want to ever be or do to someone else what they did to me . I was always a true friend to them and everyone ...........I will continue to be who I am... The way God made me .. It’s their choice to .do what they want.......... But I won’t change !!! A couple more things ....... As you may have heard my x BIL has cancer and it’s spreading . Although he stop talking to me because of the divorce 7 years ago !!! I just sent him a card saying that I cherished all the good times that we had and wish him well. Now I don’t know if it was right or wrong..................,but it was What I felt that I wanted to do . Because ..............I am what am !!!!! LoL I even started to talk to my x Father. He to has cancer that is spreading.... (Kind of glad that I got away from all of them !!) No ... Only kidding .......... So I say hi to him and talk a little ...he’s a WII Veteran so ............we always talked War stuff. My other friend that has left me ..Well we’re kind of getting back together... 40 years of friendship !!! I’m trying to put the past behind and forget everything ... I don’t know that I can .... I’m trying .
Take care ............Time man ...Bob
I think that sending that card to your ex BIL was so nice and I would have done the same. You are a kind and loving person and you should never change.
Hugs,
Donna
At stages I got very hurt or upset by it, but I have now resigned myself to the fact that so many of the people who have been in my life for a very long time are not quite so sure how and where I fit in any more. It has really made me fully grasp how alone one really is in life, and the more capable we are of being happy within ourselves and don't mind being alone, the easier it is to cope.
I have also had to branch out and work on meeting new people and finding new circles of friends, because somehow that way it is easier, because they don't do this nervous dance around me trying to work out who this new me is. They just accept me for who I am.
Kim, I am so terribly sorry that the church you belonged to treated you that way. That truly is despicable, and especially for a so called Christian community. Thankfully I have to admit my church friends have been wonderful, and there has been no obvious change in how they have treated me, so much so that some of the other people in the church hadn't even realised that I was no longer married. I have had nothing but support there, but that might be because our Associate rector is a divorced woman.
I get the feeling that it may take quite a few years post divorce until one can fully work out who ones really true friends are who will be there through thick and thin, and in the meantime some of the others are tending to fade along the wayside. No doubt some of this is as a result of the changes taking place in us too.
When my husband left our marriage, he also left our community and moved to a different part of the country to be with the OW. In some ways, that was the best thing for me. Our "couple" friends stayed friends with me. I continue to enjoy a nice relationship with them. I have also made a lot of new friends - some through my work, others through different avenues. The only "friend" that I lost through all this was my SIL. More my doing than hers. We still have limited contact, but definitely not the same. I've learned to value and enjoy the people in my life now. I am very blessed. "Letting them go with love" sounds like a very healthy and healing response you have chosen.
