Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...

I thought divorce was between 2 people, my husband and me. I was so naive. I never realized my divorce included families and friends, some who took sides or some who were just uncomfortable.
I am sorry for babbling, but it never occurred to me I would be spending holidays without 'family', alone. But then, holidays do not mean anything to me anymore. It is just another day. I have never even received a holiday card or birthday card since I filed. When my MIN died and we were separated , my name was not included in the obit at all. Her grandchildren were born to her son by immaculate conception I guess. I feel as though I never existed. The irony, is that my younger daughter, whom I love with all my heart and my brother, still invite my ex to Thanksgiving and Xmas celebrations at their homes, whereas his family pretend I never existed. With the PTSD, I am unable to be around my ex without having a panic attack. I am frightened of him still.
OMG, this is the first year it has hit me so hard. I am so sorry for taking it out on all of you.
Thanks for the hugs.....
This year Thanksgiving will be at my nieces house and my kids will come after their dad's early dinner. Luckily he accommodates our family schedule. (he still has guilt years later!)
Christmas is at my house. I look forward to the last long vacation at home my daughter will have. She is a senior in college and next year will be working full time at a hospital in another state so I'll never again have her home for a few weeks at at time. That's a very tough realization. Next year Christmas might involve travel for me instead of the usual traditions....
All the best to each of us as we adjust to a different reality year after year. Gratitude must be found in tiny things - the taste of pie, the beauty of a song, a phone call with a friend. or a conversation virutally on this forum. hugs and love to all.
Last year I had my ex FIL to Christmas - he is one of my favorite people and he told me he missed my family Christmas celebrations. I was tickled!
This year I stayed home alone for Thanksgiving and was ok because I had prepared myself for it. I'm cooking the full dinner tomorrow so maybe that is why today was ok.
Tomorrow would have been our 10th wedding anniversary so it made me a bit blue today but I think being so busy tomorrow, I probably won't give it much thought. We don't share kids together (2nd marriage for both) so that isn't an issue with us. I do miss his kids but we've lost all contact with each other, probably for the best. I need to buck up and just enjoy my day tomorrow. Things sure have changed these past few years. My mom is gone, my husband is gone, my kids now celebrate with their significant other families, even my brother who always spent this day with us made other plans this year.
I know holidays are hard for most of us, so lets just put on our happy face and enjoy them as best as we can. I for one have lots to be thankful for and I try and be mindful of those blessings but I'm with Moscato, always glad when they are over. Take care everyone!!!
Lots of HUGS
I, too, lost my husband, my mom and my oldest daughter in the same year. Holidays will never be the same. My daughter was born on Xmas and that makes it harder. You have a great attitude. I wish you the best for the New Year.
It just never occurred to me that divorcing a husband could change the dynamics of the entire family.
You and your loving dogs have a great holiday. Better then an ex any time!
