Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
My stbx just found out today that because of his severance package from his work he will not be able to collect unemployment for at least 6 months. Plus he has to give me 50% of that severance. In essence he will have to use his half to live off for the next 6 months; which is exactly what I will have to do so it just seems fair to me that he be in the same boat.
I think he thought he would have this money just for himself and the unemployment too....nope, not gonna happen says Uncle Sam.
He is sooooo stressed out over this. Plus he's agreed to help me catch up on some of my own bills that he got behind on. So, I'm taking some of his half right from the start. He's feeling the monetary pain of divorce I must say and this is just the beginning. I think this is why they say "it's cheaper to keep her". LOL

I'm glad you are going to be getting something! A few weeks ago, you were pretty sure you were getting nothing.

My brother's mil is the sweetest lady. She is in her 70's. I've had her to my home for every family party for many years. Her ex dropped the bomb on her after close to 40 years of marriage. He traveled for business the last 10 years of their marriage all week long. It turns out he was living with the OW during the week and coming home to her on the weekends. He won't speak to his daughter because he made her choose between them and she refused. He's never met his grandchildren. The new wife wrote an email to 2 of the 3 children saying he has dementia and something must be done. She doesn't want to deal with it. She will most likely throw him in a cheap nursing home and he will be alone. The wife he left would have taken care of him for his entire life. I think all of us would have too.
Who pays the taxes on this? Many people do not realize that unemployment is taxable.. as is maintenance.. I do not have to tell you that as you working for the accountant. But I would like to know, I know someone else in this situation.. getting divorced, stbx lost his corporate job, got a package.
